San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The UC Davis Men's Basketball Team (17-12, 10-7 Big West) held Cal Poly (7-23, 1-17 Big West) to just 18.2 percent from 3-point range in a 4-for-22 shooting performance on the way to a 58-52 victory against the Mustangs on the road Saturday.
The Aggies had four players score in double figures, led by Elijah Pepper, who had 20 points and two steals. Pepper made Aggie history tonight as he is now the all-time leading scorer for a single season in Aggie history, breaking a 35 year old record set by Randy DeBortoli in the 1987-88 season. Pepper's 20 points tonight give him 617 points on the season with two more games left to play. He is also inching closer and closer to the all-time career points scored as he is now within just one point of becoming the fourth highest scoring Aggie ever.
Ty Johnson tacked on 12 points and eight rebounds while Leo DeBruhl helped out with 11 points and two steals from the bench. DeBruhl has continued to be a key member of the rotation, as he entered the night fresh off a double-double against UC San Diego.
UC Davis out-rebounded Cal Poly 41-34 in Saturday's game, led by Kane Milling's 11 boards. The Aggies also grabbed 10 offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points. The Aggies move to 15-2 in games they have outrebounded their opponents.
The Ags defense held Cal Poly shooters to only 36.4 percent from the field, and showed off their ability to force turnovers, as Cal Poly to coughed it up 15 times due to the Aggies pressure. The Mustangs did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only eight offensive rebounds and scored four second chance points while UC Davis pulled down 31 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 21-15, UC Davis went on a 6-0 run with 3:34 left in the first half, capped off by a bucket from Leo Debruhl which tied the game at 21. Cal Poly then pulled ahead, sending the Aggies into halftime down 26-24.
After intermission, UC Davis kept the Mustangs from increasing their lead before going on an 8-0 run to seize a 58-52 lead with 29 seconds to go in the contest, The Aggies held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 58-52 win. UC Davis sparked it from three-point range in the second half, hitting five shots from deep to score 15 of its 34 points.
