Aggies Ink Five Student-Athletes on National Signing Day

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis football inked five prospective student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on National Signing Day, head coach Dan Hawkins announced on Wednesday. Including the early signing period, the Aggies welcome 17 signees to the class.

Alphabetically, the February NLI class is comprised of wide receiver/defensive back Malachi Bean-Seay, outside linebacker Grant Garretson, wide receiver/defensive back Ja'san Morton, wide receiver/defensive back Jeremiah Ruffin and tight end Ian Simpson.

All five hail from California with two coming to Davis as junior college transfers.

Heads to UC Davis from Laguna Creek High School in Elk Grove … Played football for Coach Ryan Nill … Set two school records with 1,146 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns … Named the Metropolitan League Skills Player of the Year … Two-time first-team all-league honoree … Named Team MVP and Team Captain … Played in the Optimist All State Football Game … Hauled in 45 passes for 1,146 yards and totaled 18 touchdowns his senior season.

PERSONAL: Son of LaTrece J. Bean … Has three siblings named MaKayla, Na'Lani and Dwayne … Plans to major in computer science … Served as a volunteer and mentor and a local football camp and also volunteered feeding the homeless. 

Grant Garretson
OLB | 6-3 | 240 | Chico, Calif. / Butte College / Pleasant Valley HS


Comes to Davis from Butte College … Attended Pleasant Valley High School where he was a two-sport athlete in football and basketball … Spent two years at Butte … Named the Most Improved Player in 2021 … Voted Team Captain in 2022 … Played in 17 games over the two seasons and compiled 63 tackles and three sacks … Butte College All-Academic Team … Played football for Coach Mark Cooley PVHS … All-league selection his junior season … Voted Mr. Viking and won the Defensive Player of the Year Award … Led the Vikings with 14 sacks his junior season.

PERSONAL: Son of Greg and Bethany Garretson … Has two siblings named Gabe and Gavin … Plans to major in civil engineering … Participated in Shasta 4-H for two years … Enjoys the outdoors, fishing and camping … Likes to play basketball in his free time.

Ja'san Morton

Comes to UC Davis from James Logan High School in Union City … Played football and basketball at JLHS … Played football for Coach Eddie Smith … An all-league selection at defensive back as a junior … First-team all-league at wide receiver as a senior … Helped James Logan to back-to-back quarterfinal appearances … Made the honor roll … Named MVP of both the football and basketball teams … Named Player of the Week in football.

PERSONAL: Son of Jensen and LaTreece Morton … Plans to major in business … Enjoys playing video games and hanging out with family.

Jeremiah Ruffin

Comes to Davis from Heritage High School where he was a three-sport athlete … Played football for Coach Dave Fogelstrom … Named to the 2021-22 All-State Football Team as a multi-purpose WR/DB … Two-time All-BVAL selection at WR and a 2021-22 first-team honoree at DB … Two-time Heritage High School Offensive MVP … Posted two of the top-10 single game receiving yards records and is No. 2 all-time in school history in single game touchdowns … Participated in the All-American Combine in San Antonio and the Pro Bowl Combine in Las Vegas … A 2022 NCS finalist in the jumping events.

PERSONAL: Son of Jeremy and Nicole Ruffin … Has two siblings named Elijah and Isaiah … Plans to major in human biology … Played football, basketball and track … Active in his community and church … Has helped get food and materials for the homeless … Volunteered at the Christmas Toy Drive in San Francisco … Earned the NCS Distinguished Schola-Athlete Award in all three sports he participated in.

Ian Simpson

Heads to UC Davis from American River College by way of Whitney High School in Rocklin … Also attended Sacramento High School … Two-sport athlete in football and baseball … Caught 21 passes for 330 yards with a team-high six touchdowns in 2022 … Also recorded a rushing touchdown … Played for American River College Head Coach Jon Osterhout … Played football for Coach Zack McNally at Whitney … Helped Whitney make the section finals his senior season … Compiled 500 receiving yards and seven touchdowns as a junior … Hauled in nine touchdowns and posted 700 receiving yards as a senior … Second-team Sierra Foothill League selection as a junior … Two-time Whitney football Offensive Player of the Year.

PERSONAL: Son of Sandra Simpson … Has one brother named West who played football at Nevada … Plans to major in administration of justice … Enjoys chicken and rice.
