Las Cruces, NM — Two Aggies placed within the top-10 individually as UC Davis finished the Golf Iconic Classic in fifth place to give the team their second consecutive top-five finish.
DAY THREE
The Aggies were over par for the first time all weekend, finishing round three with a four-over-par, 292. The result today gives UC Davis their second consecutive top-five finish after winning their last tournament in Idaho.
Lauren Calderon wrapped up the weekend with a near-top-five finish, tying for sixth place, marking a career-best finish. After two career-best opening rounds of 70, Calderon shot a 73 in her third and final round on the course to finish at three-under-par. Opening the day with a bogey on the first hole, Calderon wouldn't let it affect her as she came alive during the final 11 holes, carding all three of her birdies during the latter stretch of today's round. Calderon used strong play on par 5s to create a top-10 finish. On these longer holes throughout the tournament, Calderon totaled seven-under-par and was third-best among the field on the par 5s.
After firing a round two tournament best of 68 yesterday,
Abby Leighton battled through adversity in round three to secure a top-10 finish individually. With four birdies today, Leighton made the most of her round in the same manner as Calderon, maximizing her scoring on the par 5s to limit the damage caused by early bogey efforts on the front nine.
Skyler May turned in the best Aggie score of round three with a one-under-par, 71. May was second on the team in pars throughout the tournament and has shown throughout the fall how she is one of the most dependable golfers on the team, consistently ranking right within the top half in par efforts.
Elle Rastvortseva finished the Golf Iconic Classic with a 74, becoming the third Aggie alongside Calderon and Leighton to place within the top 25. Outside of a double bogey and her final hole, Rastvortseva was in control all day and displayed great course management, at one point recording 11 straight holes at even or under par.
Vani Karamanal rounded out the Aggie scoring, with the star freshman placing tied for 42nd after a 74 today. Karimanal recorded two birdies today, both on par 5s with the first coming on the 488-yard hole eight, with the other on the 496-yard hole 12.
The Aggies will just one more fall tournament with UC Davis traveling to Hawai'i for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. The tournament will last three days and take place from October 23-25 at Kapolei Golf Club.

Recording five birdies on the day, Leighton was mistake free until the ninth hole where she recorded her lone bogey on the day. At the turn however, Leighton rattled off three straight birdies and then finished with six straight pars to cap off her outstanding performance.
Lauren Calderon turned in a brilliant effort again, recording a two-under-par, 70 for the second consecutive day. Her six birdies today is a big reason the Aggies are in third place among the team birdie leaders.
Elle Rastvortseva out of the fifth spot in the lineup has been one of the most dependable golfers throughout the season. After a 73 yesterday, she turned in a one-under-par, 71 as she sits just inside the top-25, tied for 22nd place.
Vani Karamanal and
Skyler May round out the Aggie lineup each carding a three-over-par, 75 today.

DAY ONE
Consistency was the driving force behind UC Davis' strong start to the Golf Iconic Classic in New Mexico. With all five Aggies carding scores under 75, the entire lineup is within the top-35 of the individual leader boards.
Much of this effort is in part to UC Davis' ability to limit their mistakes on par 4's, as UC Davis ranks third in scoring on these holes.
Individually, the Aggies have had standout performances from
Abby Leighton and
Lauren Calderon who both carded a 70 and sit at two-under-par.
Leighton who most recently placed third at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, continues to display her prowess as a former All-Big West First Team selection. Despite recording a double-bogey to begin her day starting on the eighth hole, Leighton offsetted it with six birdies, good for second most among the field, with four of them occurring on the back-nine portion of the course.
Calderon like Leighton, found most of her success on the back-nine of the course, specifically when she cashed in an eagle effort on hole 12 and, backing that up with a birdie on hole 13. Calderon's birdie has UC Davis down as one of only five teams to card a birdie during round one.
As mentioned, consistency has been key to UC Davis' early placement at the Golf Iconic Classic as Vani Karamanal,
Skyler May, and
Elle Rastvortseva all are tied for 35th place so far with quality rounds of 73, good for one-over-par.
Rastvortseva after round one is tied for second among the field in birdies with 15 during her opening round, while May has added 13 pars to UC Davis' count.
