DAVIS, Calif. –
Mike Cody, an Aggie football letterwinner, has been promoted to offensive coordinator, UC Davis head coach
Dan Hawkins announced Monday. Cody spent the last two seasons as a position coach, working with the offensive line.
"
Mike Cody has been an integral component to our offense over the past three years, working with Tim Plough and
Cody Hawkins," Coach Hawkins said. "He provides continuity and will do a great job developing our offensive attack."
Cody takes over a prolific Aggie offense after former UCD offensive coordinator
Cody Hawkins was named the head coach at Idaho State.
"Mike has deep Aggie roots, having played at UC Davis, and being mentored by Aggie greats Bob Biggs, Mike Moroski, Fred Arp, and Lou Bronzan," Hawkins added. "Mike has proven experience as an offensive coordinator, having held the position at College of Idaho. We are proud of Mike as a person, husband, father, and coach, and look forward to the future with optimism."
This last season, the UC Davis offensive line proved to be one of the best in FCS football. The unit paced the Big Sky Conference and ranked ninth in the country, allowing just 1.00 sack per contest for a total of 11 on the season. The disciplined approach also was a big reason why the Ags ranked eighth in the FCS in fewest penalties.
Under his tutelage, senior
Nick Amoah became the first offensive lineman in the Division I era of Aggie football to be named an All-American (Stats Perform, AP, Phil Steele) and also the first to garner Big Sky Offensive Lineman of the Year honors by Phil Steele.
Amoah, a first-team All-Big Sky selection in 2022, was joined by fellow linemen
Connor Pettek (2
nd Team) and
Jordan Ford (2
nd Team) on the all-conference list.
UC Davis was the fourth-ranked total offense in the nation and second in the Big Sky at 486.5 yards per game this past season. The passing offense ranked ninth in FCS and the rushing offense was 24
th.
In his first full season with the offensive line in 2021,
Jake Parks and Pettek garnered All-Big Sky accolades as the offensive line ranked seventh in the country in the fewest sacks allowed and checked in with the 11
th-best total offense numbers in FCS. The Aggies also ranked fourth overall in fewest penalties per game.
A tight end for the Aggies for two seasons in 2010-11, the Colfax native began his coaching career under legendary UC Davis head coach Bob Biggs as a graduate assistant in 2012. He then spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Northern Arizona University, working with the offensive line for Adam Stenavich, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, after spending 2013 as the offensive line coach at Torrey Pines High.
In 2016, the opportunity to connect with another UC Davis figure arose as he became the offensive coordinator/offensive line coach for Aggie Hall of Famer and former NFL veteran Mike Moroski at the College of Idaho. As the O-line coach, he mentored left tackle Josh Brown to AP and AFCA All-America status, plus appearances in the NFLPA Bowl and Hula Bowl. Cody later transitioned to OC/quarterbacks coach, during which quarterback Darius-James Peterson earned Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors.
Under Cody's watch, the Yotes set the school record for total offense in his first season, then broke the record again in 2017. In 2018, his offense averaged 30.9 yards per game, the most by a C of I team in 65 years.
In Cody's final season in Caldwell, the 'Yotes went undefeated in the regular season, reached the NAIA quarterfinals for the first time in program history, and finished No. 5 in the final national poll. The offense set the school scoring record yet again – the third time in his tenure – averaging 37 points per game while ranking among NAIA leaders in rushing offense (fifth) and total offense (sixth).
Cody has yet another connection to UC Davis athletics: his wife, Elise Winbrock, was a two-year captain for the women's soccer team. The two actually met in the training room, as Cody was recovering from a toe injury while Winbrock was coming back from an ACL injury. "She made sure I knew 'toe pain' was no reason for rehab," Cody recalls. The couple has traveled to Spain, Portugal, Italy and France together. They also share a love for the mountains of Idaho and the Pacific coast in California.
The Cody's welcomed their first child (Hayes) before his first season as the offensive line coach in Davis and are expecting a second son soon.
Cody earned a UC Davis degree in psychology in 2012 and completed his master's in educational leadership in 2015 at NAU.
