UC Davis falls to Cal in Pile's Return to Berkeley

Box Score

Berkeley, Calif. — The UC Davis Aggies had an action packed Friday night in Berkeley as they faced the Golden Bears. The Aggies would drop this contest by a score of 1-2.

On a Senior Night for the California Golden Bears, it was the Aggies Senior Forward, Brooke Sanchez who shined. Recording her 5th goal of the year after receiving a perfectly placed ball from Lizzy Tedrow at the 7:54 mark. Sanchez was able to beat the Berkeley back line and provide the Aggies a much needed answer after Kiki de Bruijne was able to kick off action Friday night with a goal for the Golden Bears at the 5:57 mark.

After dropping the latest contest to Stanford, UC Davis came out Friday night with a different type of moxie. Contributing to this effort was the relentless effort of Milou Korthouwer and the return of Karly Redman who missed the last four games due to injury. Kourthower provided UC Davis with four shots and applied to Berkeley's goalkeeper all game. Two of those four shots were on goal. Redman supplied UC Davis with one shot on the night and had a nose for the ball all night as she continuously pushed the pace and helped set up quality looks for the Davis in limited time.

Another bright spot for UC Davis tonight was the defense of Zoe Mohrman. She was able to pick up a huge defensive save during the second period of play on a lofted ball into the circle, completely denying the Cal attack. The save effort allowed UC Davis to go into the half knotted at one-a-piece.

After half, the Aggies and Golden Bears engaged in a frantic pace for periods three and four. Tonight's match had the makings of the most exciting game for the Aggies all season, right up there with the victory against Bellarmine, and Shootout against UMass Lowell.

While the excitement was present, the result didn't tip to the Aggies favor. After a back and forth third period, the Golden Bears were able to take the lead at the beginning of the fourth period by executing a penalty corner that ended with a Luzi Persiehl goal.

Davis was able to get multiple shots off in an attempt to answer just minutes after this Berkeley goal, and even emptied the net with two minutes remaining, but couldn't find the back of the net in time.

UC Davis Field Hockey returns Friday, Oct. 7 when they travel to Providence, Rhode Island and face Bryant University at Goldberger Family Field in a match scheduled for 10:00AM PDT. The Aggies play two road games before returning back to Aggie Field Hockey Facility Friday, Oct. 21 when they take on James Madison for Senior Day.
