Aggies Battle Back But Fall Short in Series Opener, 6-4

DAVIS, Calif. – Libbie McMahan sparked a three-run sixth inning to pull the Aggies withing two, but the UC Davis softball team could not catch Hawai'i as it fell, 6-4, in the series opener at La Rue Field on Friday. After the day, the Aggies move to 21-29 overall and 9-16 in Big West play.

The score was even at one until the Rainbow Wahine broke the game open with a four-spot in the third inning.

The Aggies would fight back with that three-run sixth. Delaney Diaz started the rally by reaching on an error by the right fielder that put her on second. Reese Mattley singled home Sierra Hillman, who pinch-ran for Diaz to open the scoring. McMahan then blasted her second home run of the season to drive in two and pull the Ags to the eventual final score of 6-4.

Mattley paced UC Davis at the plate with two of the six hits in the ballgame. On top of the McMahan home run, Sommer Kisling, Sarah Starks and Claudia Kim also got in the box score for the Ags.

Sarah Reineman (3-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits. Brianna Lopez (14-7) earned the win for Hawai'i, allowing the four runs – three earned on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings.

The two teams will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Claudia Kim and Sierra Hillman will be recognized before the first game for Senior Day.
