Aggies sweep a pair at Fresno State Invite

Wijnbelt with a pair of hat tricks as UC Davis sweeps San Jose State and Indiana

FRESNO, Calif. -- Junior Noelle Wijnbelt finished with a team-high six goals thanks to a pair of hat tricks, while Allyson Clague added three goals and two assists on the day, helping the No. 10 UC Davis women's water polo to a sweep of its Saturday matches at the Fresno State Invite at the Aquatics Center in Fresno, Calif.

The Aggies improved to 9-5 overall with the victories, opening the day with 13-8 win over No. 11 San Jose State in the morning -- their second win over the Spartans this year -- before closing the day with a 9-7 victory over No. 17 Indiana later in the afternoon.

Wijnbelt extended her team-high scoring total to 34 goals in 14 matches with her two performances on Saturday, part of a group of 11 UC Davis players to find the back of the cage on the day. Goalkeeper Sophia Noble finished with a total of 10 saves in the two matches, while Nellie McAdams entered in relief, finishing with four stops in 19 minutes.

The Aggies return to the pool next weekend in Irvine, Calif., at the Barbara Kalbus Tournament, opening play on Friday (Feb. 25) with a rematch against Arizona State at 4:15 p.m.

After surrendering the opening goal, Wijnbelt's first score of the day sparked a 3-0 run for UC Davis, and Ashley Salem's score with 34 seconds remaining in the first period staked the Aggies to a one-goal advantage after the first eight minutes.

Wijnbelt opened the second quarter scoring with her second of the day, helping her team win the period, 3-1, and hold a 7-4 advantage at the break. Both teams finished with a pair of goals in the third as UC Davis maintained its lead, but the Aggies turned on the jets in the fourth to pull away as Wijnbelt completed her hat trick followed by three straight goals from Julia Hartmann, Jordan Werkmeister, and Hailey Williams to wrap up the win.

In addition to Wijnbelt's hat trick, Hartmann and Grace Pelkey finished with two goals an an assist for three points, while Emily Aikema added a pair of helpers.

UC Davis held a slim 25-23 advantage in shots, but shot .520 on the day to the Spartans' 35 percent.

#10 UC DAVIS 9, #17 INDIANA 7
A back-and-forth opening period had the teams tied at two apiece after the first eight minutes before the Aggies took a one-goal lead into the locker room at the break. Williams finished with two of those early scores, while Clague, Wijnbelt, and Ryan Sund, also found the back of the cage for the 5-4 advantage.

Goals by Alyssa Lengtat and Clague to start the third allowed UC Davis to lengthen its lead a bit, scoring two minutes apart for the 7-4 lead, and the Aggies held the Hoosiers off from there, trading goals down the stretch and never letting Indiana closer than two goals the rest of the way.

UC Davis out-shot the Hoosiers, 27-23, for the match.
