Aggies' streak snapped with loss at Bakersfield

Hall finishes with 29 points and 13 rebounds to lead UC Davis

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Senior Cierra Hall finished with a game-high 29 points to lead two other teammates in double figures, but UC Davis could not completely erase an 11-point deficit on Saturday afternoon, as CSU Bakersfield held off a couple of Aggie rallies before inching away for an 84-75 victory at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif.

UC Davis had its three-game winning streak snapped with the defeat, falling to 12-10 overall and 6-6 in Big West Conference play. Led by Jayden Eggleston's 27 points, the Roadrunners improved to 3-16 overall and 2-8 in league play.

Hall's 29 points marked the second-highest total of her career, trailing only her career-high 32 points set in a win against Boston University on Dec. 5, 2019. It was her fourth consecutive 20-point scoring performance -- the first UC Davis player to record at least that many games with 20-or-more points since Morgan Bertsch did it in eight consecutive games from Jan. 31-March 2, 2019.

The Cypress, Calif., native -- who appeared in her 133rd career game to set a new school record -- finished 9-of-17 from the floor, including four three-pointers and 7-of-8 from the line, to go with 13 rebounds, completing her seventh double-double of the season.

The 29 points also moved Hall into the top 10 on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,245 career points, passing both Pele Gianotti (1,222 from 2014-18) and Head Coach Jennifer Gross (1,243 from 1993-97). She now stands six points back of Ellen Porshneva (2003-06, 2007-08) for ninth and 16 points shy of Aimee Conner (1989-93) for eighth.

Sophomore Evanne Turner finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 from the field, including four three-pointers, adding four rebounds, while senior Sage Stobbart finished with 10 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.

UC Davis trailed by five points after one and was in the hole by as many as 11 on two occasions in the second quarter before clawing back to trail by eight at the break. The Aggies then opened the second half with a 9-2 run to make it a one-point game and force a Roadrunner timeout.

Out of the break, CSU Bakersfield rediscovered its rhythm, scoring the next seven points to rebuild its advantage to eight, only to watch UC Davis come back again, using a 14-7 burst over the next two minutes to claw back to within a point at the end of three.

That would be as close as the Aggies would get the rest of way, unable to fully complete the comeback. An eight-point deficit was trimmed to just two on back-to-back three-pointers by Stobbart and Turner to make it 65-63 with 6:18 to play and was down by the same amount two minutes later before Bakersfield began to inch away.

An 8-1 burst by the Roadrunners rebuilt the lead to nine and UC Davis never got closer than six the rest of the way.

The Aggies shot a robust 45 percent from the field, hit 10 three-pointers, and out-rebounded Bakersfield, 34-27, but could not cool a hot-shooting Roadrunner squad that hit 50 percent from the field and half their three-pointers, while sinking 20-of-26 from the line -- 13 more attempts than UC Davis on the day.

Remaining on the road for their final two contests away from the University Credit Union Center this season, the Aggies travel to CSUN on Thursday (Feb. 24) for a 7 p.m tip, before facing UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Feb. 26) at 2 p.m.
