IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Davis junior standout
Andrei Volgin was named the Big West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. The honor is the first of his career and the first of the season for the Aggies.
Volgin, who is riding a five-match winning streak, won his two weekend singles matches at the No. 1 spot, including a victory over Mark Keki to help lead the Aggies to a thrilling Causeway Cup win over rival Sacramento State. Volgin then downed James Watt in a team victory of Saint Mary's.
The Fremont native was in a battle with the No. 38-ranked player in the country - Alexandre Rotsaert of Stanford -
nearly taking the first set, falling in a tie breaker and then in the hunt in the second set before the match was unfinished.
The Aggies will once again hit the road during the week and then return home for matches on the weekend. UC Davis heads to San Francisco to face USF on Friday, Feb. 18 and then hosts Santa Clara and William Jessup on Saturday, Feb. 19.
