Aggies Sweep Day Two of the NorCal Kickoff

DAVIS, Calif. – The UC Davis softball team swept the Saturday competition on day two of the NorCal Kickoff held at La Rue Field. The Aggies opened the day with a 4-1 win against Saint Mary's and then secured the sweep with a 4-1 victory over Montana.

 Game 1

The Aggies put the pressure on early, scoring in the first frame on aggressive baserunning. Sophomore Anna Dethlefson scored all the way from first on what was supposed to be a simple sacrifice bunt from junior Sommer Kisling. The Gaels couldn't handle the bunt, and Dethlefson was able to swipe home with no one there to cover the plate on a heads-up play.

UC Davis tacked on another in the third when Dethlefson smacked an inside the park home run straight off the wall down the left field line that caromed into foul territory.

That started a string of three-straight innings with runs as the Aggies also scored in the fourth and fifth. A triple off the bat of sophomore Leah Polson plated Kisling in the fifth.

Sophomore Taylor Fitzgerald earned the win in her season debut. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits while striking out six in 6.2 innings. Sophomore Sarah Reineman came in for the one-out save.

 Game 2

Behind the right arm of sophomore hurler Kenedi Brown and the big bat of senior Delaney Diaz, the Aggies took down Montana in game two.

Brown (1-1) went the distance, striking out six while allowing one run on six hits in the complete game effort.

Diaz collected two hits, including the dagger in the sixth inning as the Camarillo native blasted a shot over the wall in left to give UC Davis all the insurance Brown would need. Diaz finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Sarah Starks went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with a first inning triple to put the Aggies on the board in the first for the second straight game. Starks totaled two RBI as well. Dethlefson continued her big day with two hits and two runs atop the order.

UC Davis will once again face Saint Mary's to close out tournament play tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
