DAVIS, Calif. — Senior punter
Daniel Whelan represented UC Davis on the 2021 College Football America Yearbook's FCS Preseason Starting Lineup. This is the equivalent of a preseason All-America team, the second such honor for the sustainable environmental design major from Rancho Mirage this summer.
Whelan previously earned a spot on Athlon Sports Preseason All-America team in June.
Whelan led the Big Sky Conference with a 47.9 average and would have led all NCAA FCS punters in the same category but fell one attempt shy of hitting the qualifying minimum. He totaled 17 punts, with eight attempts that pinned opponents inside their 20-yard lines and seven that traveled 50 yards or more. He also handled all kickoffs and served as the holder on place kicks during the five spring games.
Overall, UC Davis led the FCS in net punting at 43.47.
The appearance in the CFA annual continues a string of awards for Whelan, who earned first-team All-Big Sky Conference honors and made four All-America rosters.
The Aggies finished 3-2 in the abbreviated spring 2021 season, and finished with national rankings of No. 14 and No. 16 by the media and the coaches' association, respectively. UC Davis begins its fall season at Tulsa on Thursday, September 2.
