DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis started Sunday's Big West series finale on a positive note by scoring twice in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.

After he reached base on an errant throw to first, Jalen Smith advanced to third when Cooper Morrison, the very next batter, hit a double to right field. Jake Brandel followed with a double of his own, which drove in Smith and placed two Aggies in scoring position.

As the inning progressed, Spencer Gedestad drove in the first of his two runs on a ground out to second, which allowed Morrison to touch home plate.

Gedestad recorded his second RBI of the afternoon when he hit his fourth home run of the year on a solo shot to left center.

Unfortunately for UC Davis, CSUN responded to the Aggies' two-run first inning by scoring six of its own in four of the following five frames to leave Phil Swimley Field with an 8-3 win.

UC Davis will enter Friday's 3 p.m. series opener at UC San Diego with a 12-33 overall and 6-22 Big West record, the Matadors will continue their season with a 16-16 Big West record since their season did not begin until league play.

Following Friday's game in La Jolla, the Aggies and Tritons will square off twice in Saturday's 12 p.m. doubleheader before ending the weekend next Sunday at 1 p.m.
