DAVIS, Calif. — The Aggies' No. 1 duo of
Paloma Bowman and
Colleen McGuire posted a win atop the lineup in the second match of the day, and UC Davis forced a decisive third set in four other contests on the day, but visiting No. 10 Pepperdine posted a pair of victories by the scores of 5-0 and 4-1 on Friday morning at the UC Davis Beach Volleyball Courts.
The Aggies fell to 5-14 overall in the first-ever meetings with the Waves, who improved to 10-12 overall with the two wins on Friday.
After falling in a, 21-15, 19-21, 15-8, three-set battle in the first match of the day against Carly Skjodt and Melanie Paul, Bowman and McGuire took care of business in straight sets in the second half of the doubleheader, taking down Alexis Filippone and Brook Bauer, 21-17, 21-19, to earn their eighth win overall of the year and their seventh at the ones in 2021.
The seven wins at the ones are now the most by any duo in the brief three-year history of the program, while Bowman and McGuire moved into a tie for the top spot for overall dual wins in program annals, matching Bowman and
Heather Reed's eight individual wins during the 2019 campaign.
In the opener,
Ashlee Goycoochea and
Bailey Herdman bounced back from an opening set loss to win the second 21-14, and pushed the Pepperdine pair of Gracie Pedersen and Cameron Baklenko in the third before falling 15-11 at the fours.
At the fives,
Alicia Letvin and
Summer Bouquet started their contes with a 21-18 victory in the opening set and trailed by a point, 15-14, in the third before falling to Kristine Briede and Katie Gavin.
Goycoochea was again part of a three-setter in the second dual of the day, teaming with
Alexa Rockas at the fours. The pair rebounded from a 21-11 loss in the opening set to force the third with a 21-19 win in the second set, only to fall by a 15-9 score in the deciding frame.
UC Davis returns home on Sunday (April 11) with another doubleheader, hosting San Jose State at 1:30 p.m., before taking on Saint Mary's for a second time this season at 4 p.m.
