IRVINE, Calif. – UC Davis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles round of Friday's First Round matchup versus Hawai'i at the Big West Conference Men's Tennis Championship.
Andrei Volgin and
Mitchell Davis earned their team-high 11th doubles victory of the season, and were the first Aggie tandem to finish action on their respective court by defeating Blaz Seric and Axel Labrunie, 6-1. After the Rainbow Warriors won the next doubles match,
Ivan Thamma and
David Goulak's 6-3 victory allowed the Aggies to win the round and take a 1-0 lead, entering singles play.
When action resumed,
Chethan Swanson won his second-set tiebreaker by a 7-5 result to record a 6-3, 7-6 straight-set result over Tristan Martins.
Andras Necz and Axel Labrunie split the first two sets of their matchup; Necz took the first set, 6-2, dropped the second set, 6-1, and led 5-2 when play was halted because UH collected its fourth team point by winning the other singles contests to defeat UC Davis, 4-2, at Orange County Great Park.
Men's tennis ends the 2021 season with an 8-11 overall record, Hawai'i will advance to Saturday's semifinal round with a 5-3 record.
