Game Recap: Women's Water Polo | | Mark Honbo

No. 10 UC Davis rolls past FPU in Senior Day doubleheader

Noble tallies 29 saves against 7 goals in 2021 home finale

DAVIS, Calif. -- Goalkeeper Sophia Noble collected a total of 29 saves with seven goals again, center Noelle Wijnbelt scored five total goals while freshman Tess Fundter provided another four tallies, as 10th-ranked UC Davis women's water polo swept unranked Fresno Pacific by scores of 17-2 and 13-5 in a collegiate women's water polo doubleheader at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 11-5 for the season. The Sunbirds fall to 0-9.

UC Davis also honored its three 2021 graduates prior the the game: center McKenna Martin, utility Devin Holcomb and attacker Kathleen Schafle. Martin and Holcomb each started both contests, while Schafle medically retired prior to the season.

Noble played all 64 minutes of the twinbill in the Aggie cage, holding the FPU offense in check to the tune of 2-for-26 in the opener and 5-for-25 in the nightcap. In fact, she only allowed three goals until the fourth quarter of Game 2, before Sunbird attacker Amy Zaninovich led a charge with two of four power-play conversions.

Wijnbelt posted the lone hat trick of the day in the 17-2 Game 1 win. Jordan Werkmeister, Emily Aikema and Grace Pelkey matched Fundter's total of two goals. Wijnbelt, Fundter and team captain Julia Hartmann each had two goals in the Game 2 victory.

UC Davis never trailed in either contest, holding a 5-0 lead through the first quarter in each. The two goals allowed in the opener is the lowest by an Aggie opponent since UC Davis defeated Sonoma State by a 22-2 final back on February 25, 2018.

The Aggies resume Big West Conference play with a Friday-Saturday road trip to Hawai'i next weekend. The Friday contest, which begins at 9 p.m. Pacific time, counts in the standings for the conference championships, held a week later at UC San Diego.
