Starks' homer caps second straight series sweep

Reineman fires 5.0 scoreless innings for the win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- First basemen Sarah Starks launched a two-run homer to left field while true freshman Sarah Reineman enjoyed her best starting appearance of the season, leading UC Davis to a 3-1 win over CSUN in Big West Conference women's softball action at Matador Diamond Saturday.

The victory closes out the second consecutive series sweep of the year for the Aggies, who improve to 13-18 overall and 7-5 in Big West play.

Reineman went five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Second-year freshman Kenedi Brown entered in relief, striking out two for a two-inning save.

Junior second baseman Sommer Kissling hit 2-for-3 and figured on both UC Davis scoring plays. She laced a single to right that brought in Sarah Nakahara for the game's first run in the third inning, then led off the sixth inning with a hit. Kisling then scored on Starks' blast, which came on an 0-1 pitch with one out.

CSUN managed to cut into the lead when center fielder Jaymi Stewart drove in Savannah Favre on a two-run double off Brown in the sixth. With two in scoring position and only one out, Brown then shut down the rally by retiring Kenedee Jamerson and Paloma Usquiano on back-to-back ground outs.

Nakahara and pinch hitter Megan Bower also had hits for UC Davis.

The Aggies return home to host UC San Diego for a three-game Big West set starting on Friday. The series will also mark the first time head coach Erin Thorpe faces her alma mater for a conference series, as the Tritons joined the league in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
