First-ever sweep earns Aggies doubleheader split

UC Davis shuts out San Jose State, edged by Saint Mary's

DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis beach volleyball team picked up its first-ever sweep on Sunday afternoon blanking visiting San Jose State by the score of 5-0 and earn a split of its doubleheader against the Spartans and Saint Mary's at the UC Davis Beach Volleyball Courts on campus.

The Aggies, who later fell to the Gaels by a 3-2 score in the nightcap, moved to 6-15 overall on the year, while San Jose State dropped its season-opener and Saint Mary's improved to 6-5.

UC Davis, which had come close to sweeps on seven different occasions, winning by the score of 4-1, and had an exhibition win by a 5-0 score against Gavilan College back in 2019, finally broke through for its first official sweep in the program's history on Sunday, winning four of the five contests against SJSU in straight sets.

The lone outlier came at the fours where Ashlee Goycoochea and Alicia Letvin rallied for a three-set victory after dropping the opening set, 21-16, winning the final two by the scores of 21-9 and 15-11 to clinch the shutout.

In the second dual of the day, Goycoochea and Letvin brought the Aggies even with another win at the fours, outlasting the Saint Mary's duo of Karmin Brown and Madison Baumann in three sets, 21-12, 16-21, 15-10, and the ones pair of Paloma Bowman and Colleen McGuire rallied for a huge comeback at the top of the lineup, dropping the opening set, 21-10, before bouncing back to close out the match 21-16 and 15-13 to tie the dual back up at two wins apiece.

The Gaels, however, clinched the match just moments later with a win at the threes for the 3-2 victory, avenging an earlier loss at the hands of UC Davis by the same score back on March 6 at Stanford.

With the two wins at the ones, Bowman and McGuire have won three straight matches and six of their last seven overall, with only a three-set loss to Carly Skjodt and Melanie Paul of No. 10 Pepperdine breaking up the run. Goycoochea and Letvin also won their first two matches of the season as a pair.

UC Davis returns to action on April 18, closing out a run of five consecutive duals at home with a rematch against San Jose State. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the UC Davis Beach Volleyball Courts.
