DAVIS, Calif. — Cooper Morrison and
Jake Brandel drove in runs in the seventh to bring UC Davis back from down two runs and tie the game, but a late score by visiting California Baptist proved to be the difference, tallying a run in the eighth to complete the series sweep of the Aggies by the score of 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis fell to 3-7 overall with the loss, while the Lancers improved to 6-4.
Falling behind early thanks to a four-run second by CBU, the Aggie bats made some noise in the third, making it a one-run game thanks to a three-run inning.
Kyler Arenado's RBI single scored
Spencer Gedestad to break up the shutout and, after a double steal by Arenado and
Jalen Smith put a pair in scoring position,
Michael Campagna cashed in the two runs with a single to left, making it a 4-3 contest.
The Lancers got one of the runs back in their half of the fourth on an error, and the score remained that way until the seventh as UC Davis took advantage to tie the game after the stretch.
A pair of walks set the stage for Morrison, who was looking to sacrifice the two runners into scoring position, but a throwing error by the CBU pitcher allowed Arenado to score from second, cutting the deficit to 5-4. After a pop-up that would have ended the inning, Brandel laced a 1-2 pitch back through the box to score Smith and make it 5-5.
Again, California Baptist had an answer, drawing three walks to load the bases for Grady Tuohy, whose ground ball to short was enough to bring home teammate C.J. Masciel with the go-ahead run.
UC Davis had a hit in the home half of the eighth, but left the runner stranded, before going down in order on three ground balls in the ninth to end the game.
Nick Johnson (0-1) suffered the loss for UC Davis, charged with the go-ahead run in the eighth, while Spencer Bengard (1-0) earned his first win of the year in relief, allowing a hit and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
The Aggies return home next weekend, opening a four-game series with Pepperdine on Friday (March 12) at 2:30 p.m.
