Aggies swept on Day 1 of Bulldog Classic

UC Davis falls 8-0 to both Cal and Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. -- Sophomore right fielder Megan Bower had two hits for the day, but UC Davis wound up on the losing end of two shutouts on the first day of the Bulldog Classic collegiate softball tournament at Margie Wright Diamond Saturday. The Aggies lost to California, 8-0, in the opener; then fell to host Fresno State by the same score in the nightcap.

UC Davis slips to 6-11 for the season.

Bower, a third-year communication major from Orinda, had one of four Aggie hits in Game 1, then delivered a leadoff single in the fourth for UC Davis' lone hit of FSU's Game 2 starter, Dariana Orme.

UC Davis put up its biggest scoring challenge of either game in the fourth inning of the opener, when senior center fielder Marissa Jauregui walked, then third baseman Leah Polson doubled to right, putting two in scoring position with only one out. However, Cal starter Chloe Romero retired the next two Aggies on a strikeout and pop-up, stranding the two runners in place. Romero allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts for her shutout victory.

Polson had one of four UC Davis hits in the opener, thanks to her double in the fourth inning. Second baseman Sommer Kisling led off the game with her first collegiate triple. Isabella Leon and Bower each singled in a two-out rally in the fifth but advanced no further.

Second-year freshman Kenedi Brown went the distance in Game 1, allowing 10 hits in 4.1 innings. A bases-loaded single by Amani Bradley pushed across the eighth Golden Bear run in the fifth, invoking the run rule. Taylor Fitzgerald started the nightcap against Fresno State, striking out three with no walks but allowing three unearned runs in the second.

True freshman Sarah Reineman finished the contest in the pitching circle for UC Davis. She worked herself out of a jam in the fifth, thanks to a double play between Polson and catcher Katie Steffen-Brune. However, Reineman was touched for five runs in the sixth: Bulldog center fielder Kaitlyn Jennings highlighted the frame with a two-run double, then came home on Hayleigh Galvan's walk-off single to invoke the run rule.

The Bulldog Classic concludes on Sunday, with UC Davis rematching with Cal (10 a.m.) and Fresno State (12:30 p.m.). This is the final Aggie action before the university breaks for final examinations.
