DAVIS, Calif. -- Second-year freshman catcher Michael Campagna rapped out two doubles, starter Zach Carrell allowed just one earned run in four complete innings, and senior Tim Wieser surrendered just one run in 4.2 frames or relief work, leading UC Davis to a 5-3 win over Pepperdine in the nightcap of a collegiate baseball doubleheader on Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium Saturday.
The Aggies lost the opener by a 15-0 final to move to 5-8 overall.
Campagna hit his two-baggers to lead off the fourth and seventh innings, then eventually scored in each frame. Designated hitter Shaun McHale brought him in with a single to left in the fourth, erasing the Waves' 2-1 lead from the top of the frame. Campagna later doubled past a diving effort by right fielder Ryan Johnson in that seventh, moved up on a Ben Griffin sacrifice bunt, then came home when Connor Longrie flew out to left.
Carrell pitched the first four frames for UC Davis, allowing an unearned run in the second then giving up Pepperdine's second tally when second baseman Zach Chonkich came across on a ground out to shortstop Kyler Arenado in the fourth. Campagna's run equalized in the bottom half, leaving Carrell with a no-decision when Wieser started the fifth.
Wieser escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth but otherwise only allowed a bunt single and a walk until the final inning. With two outs, Pepperdine rallied with doubles by Connor Bradshaw and pinch hitter Reese Alexiades. Nathan Peng took over the mound for Wieser, walked Chonkich to load the bases and create a force-out opportunity, then coaxed Grant Schoen to ground out to second baseman Nick Iverson for the save.
In the opener, Pepperdine starter Trevor Hinkel allowed just one hit (by Aggie center fielder Jalen Smith) and two walks to hold UC Davis scoreless in his six innings of work. The Waves pushed across multiple runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Game 1 was predetermined as a seven-inning contest, with Hayden Walker fanning two to close out. The 15 runs allowed is the most for an Aggie opponent since surrendering that many against Utah on February 15, 2020.
UC Davis and Pepperdine close out their weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
