DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis hit 8-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 40% from deep in a 62-53 win over Cal Poly at home Saturday.
UC Davis' overall record moved to 9-1 and conference record improved to 8-0 after the victory.
The Aggies had four players score in double figures, led by senior psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic, who had 18 points and five assists. Senior cell biology major Cierra Hall tacked on 13 points and junior anthropology major Kayla Konrad chipped in as well with 11 points. Making her first career start on "Senior Day," Emma Gibb added four points and five rebounds in her final home appearance.
UC Davis did a great job disrupting Cal Poly shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Konrad's one rejection led the way individually for the Aggies.
UC Davis started out the scoring by going on a 10-0 run, culminating in a three from Trpcic, to take an early lead with 5:48 left in the first quarter. The Aggies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-8 advantage. UC Davis relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
UC Davis kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 9:08 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Trpcic, to increase its lead to 23-8. The Mustangs cut into that lead, but the Aggies still enjoyed a 27-19 advantage heading into halftime. UC Davis dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 13 points close to the basket.
After intermission, UC Davis held on to its advantage and owned a 40-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UC Davis knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 13 total points.
UC Davis started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Konrad's three, to grow the lead to 46-33 with 7:38 to go in the contest. The Mustangs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 62-53 win.
The regular season comes to a close on the road next weekend as UC Davis heads to Honolulu to take on Hawai'i on Friday (March 5) and Saturday (March 6).
