SANTA CLARA, Calif. – UC Davis enjoyed a positive start to Thursday's non-conference road match in Santa Clara when
David Goulak and
Ivan Thamma defeated Mann Shah and Dominic Barretto, 6-2, in a matchup involving each team's top doubles duo.
After the Broncos captured a win at No. 3,
Mitchell Davis and
Andrei Volgin helped the Aggies collect their first team point of the day after recording a 7-5 result over Vasileios Iliopoulos and Guillaume Dalmasso.
By taking the first two singles matches, Santa Clara held a brief 2-1 lead until Thamma pulled UC Davis even at two apiece following his 6-3, 6-4 victory versus Dominic Barretto.
Thamma was not the only Aggie to enjoy an individual sweep over the Broncos because Volgin won the second and third sets of his singles match to record a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Iliopoulos.
Since Santa Clara won the other two singles matches, it left the Degheri Tennis Center with a 4-3 win in its season opener, which also doubled as the last of a three-match season-opening road swing for the Aggies.
UC Davis will enter Saturday's 2 p.m. home opener against San Francisco with a 0-3 record; Santa Clara will continue its season at 1-0.
