UC Davis falls short in 68-42 loss to Stanford

Aggies host Gonzaga on Sunday in final non-conference game

STANFORD, Calif. -- Facing its second nationally ranked opponent of the season -- and third team either ranked or receiving votes in the national polls in its last four games -- the UC Davis women's basketball team came up short on the road against No. 3 Stanford, falling to the Cardinal, 68-42, on Wednesday night at Maples Pavilion.

The Aggies fell to 5-4 overall on the year with the loss against the defending NCAA national champions, adding the Cardinal to a list that has seen UC Davis also take on No. 18/16 Oregon and a receiving votes Washington State squad in the month of December.

Led by three players in double figures, Stanford improved to 7-2 overall on the season.

Evanne Turner finished with a team-high nine points and four rebounds, while Cierra Hall added eight points and four boards, to lead the way for the Aggies, who limited the Cardinal to just 35 percent from the field in the opening quarter before Stanford broke open a five-point game with a 15-6 advantage in the second period to open up a 31-17 lead at the break.

The Cardinal increased the lead to 42-19 in the third quarter before UC Davis began to chip away with an 8-0 run that featured points from four different players. A basket by Kayla Konrad whittled the deficit down to 15, but that's as close as the Aggies would get the rest of the night.

Non-conference play comes to an end on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 19) at 2 p.m., as UC Davis plays host to Gonzaga at the University Credit Union Center.
