SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Davis saw all five starters score in double figures and defeated UCSB 78-61 on the road Saturday.
UC Davis improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in action following the victory.
The Aggies had five players score in double figures, led by cell biology major Cierra Hall, who had 20 points. Environmental science and management major Sage Stobbart tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds and psychology major Mackenzie Trpcic helped out with 11 points and nine assists.
The UC Davis offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in nine threes on 20 attempts. Hall was the most prolific shooter for the Aggies, draining four treys in the contest.
The UC Davis defense held UCSB shooters to just 36.5% from the field.
After falling behind 9-7, UC Davis went on a 7-0 run with 5:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Trpcic, to take a 14-9 lead. The Aggies then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with an 18-13 advantage.
UC Davis kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 54 seconds mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from anthropology major Kayla Konrad, to increase its lead to 37-29, a score that would hold until halftime. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
UC Davis continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Mazatlan Harris, to expand its lead further to 54-41 with 2:52 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Gauchos had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 56-47 edge.
UC Davis kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by neurobiology, physiology & behavior major Evanne Turner's jumper, to grow the lead to 67-53 with 6:06 to go in the contest. The Aggies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 78-61 win. UC Davis took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.
