Aggies match school record in return to The Pavilion

UC Davis drains 17 three-pointers in win over UC San Diego, earn the program's 250th Division I victory

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis offense tied a school single-game record with 17 makes from beyond the arc on Friday afternoon, lifting the host Aggies to an 80-62 victory over Big West Conference newcomer UC San Diego at The Pavilion.

Playing in their first game since the season-opener on Nov. 25, the Aggies improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play behind the barrage of three-pointers, matching the record set against Cal Poly in 2007 and tied against Long Beach State in 2015 and, again, against Washington State in 2017. Friday afternoon's victory marked the program's 250th Division I win, improving to 250-160 (.610) since the 2007-08 campaign, and also gave Head Coach Jennifer Gross her 99th career Big West win.
The Tritons fell to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the loss.

Junior Kayla Konrad led all scorers with a career-high 20 points, including a career-high four of the team's makes from beyond the arc, while tying her career high with seven field goals. Junior Sage Stobbart tied her career high with 18 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks, draining a career-high five three-pointers on the night, while senior Cierra Hall posted her second straight double-double -- and the fifth of her career -- with 11 points and 10 rebounds, collecting her 15th career double-digit rebounding performance.

Sophomore Evanne Turner finished with 14 points and five rebounds on 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from three-point range, continuing her hot start to the year after hitting her first seven shots and finishing 7-of-10 from the floor in the opener back in November.

Senior Mackenzie Trpcic added seven assists to lead UC Davis, which collected 22 helpers on the night, giving the Hamilton, Ontario, native her 16th career game as an Aggie with five or more assists.

UC San Diego scored the first basket of the game and was within a point midway through the first, but that would be as close as the Tritons would come the rest of the night. A 12-3 burst, featuring a three-pointer from Campbell Gray and three more by Turner, staked UC Davis to a 20-10 lead and an eight-point advantage after one period. A 7-0 run by UCSD early in the second whittled the Aggie advantage down to just four, but another 12-3 run by the home side gave them its largest lead of the night to that point at 40-25 with 2:15 to play in the half.

The Tritons continued to claw their way back into the game, chopping the deficit down to six points midway through the third, but UC Davis exploded for 12 straight points -- its largest run of the game -- to build its lead back to 18 points with 2:15 remaining in the quarter and the Aggies never looked back. One last UC San Diego rally had the visitors within nine points midway through the fourth, but a Stobbart three-pointer sparked a burst that saw UC Davis score nine of the next 10 points -- all on three-pointers -- to rebuild a 75-58 advantage, and the Aggies led by as many as 20 points in the closing minute en route to the victory.

Overall, the Aggies shot 47 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc, while the defense limited the Tritons to 37 percent shooting overall and 35 percent from beyond the arc. Sydney Brown finished with 14 points to lead UCSD.

Coupled with the 82 points scored in the victory over San Francisco to open the year on Nov. 25, UC Davis posted back-to-back 80-point performances for the first time since March 9 and 15, 2019, against UC Santa Barbara (W, 80-44) and UC Irvine (W, 82-50).

The two teams meet again on Saturday (Jan. 23) at 2 p.m., at The Pavilion. The game will be streamed live on Big West TV with a live radio broadcast available locally on KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis.
