LONG BEACH, Calif. -- UC Davis went into halftime tied 27-27 with Long Beach State, but couldn't take control in the second half and fell 66-57 to on the road Saturday.
UC Davis fell 17-12 overall and 12-4 in action following the loss.
The Aggies had two players score in double figures, led by senior environmental science and management major Sage Stobbart, who had 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Junior biomedical engineering major Campbell Gray added 10 points off of the bench and sophomore cell biology major Cierra Hall added three points, six rebounds and three steals.
The UC Davis defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 13 Long Beach State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hall's three steals led the way individually for the Aggies.
UC Davis struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
UC Davis then started off the second quarter by going on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a three from freshman communication major Katie Toole, to take an 18-14 lead. The Beach then battled back to even it up at 27-27 heading into halftime. UC Davis was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.
Long Beach State proceeded to claw their way ahead after halftime, leaving UC Davis trailing 40-39 as the game entered the fourth quarter. UC Davis played well near the basket, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
UC Davis couldn't pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 66-57. UC Davis got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 13 of its 18 total points.
The Aggies now await their next opponent, earning a double bye into the semifinals of the Big West Conference Tournament on Friday (March 13) at Noon against the lowest remaining seed at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
