Aggie softball falls in Causeway clash

UC Davis returns to action with Capital Classic Friday through Sunday

DAVIS, Calif. -- Junior left fielder Alyse Rojas and senior shortstop Isabella Leon each hit 3-for-4 with a run scored, but UC Davis ultimately fell by a 4-3 final to Sacramento State in collegiate softball action at Shea Stadium Wednesday afternoon. This is the first of two Causeway Cup clashes between the area rivals, as the Aggies will host the Hornets on Tuesday to complete the season series.

UC Davis moves to 7-8 for the year. Sacramento State improves to 10-6 overall.

Rojas earned a hit in each of the three Aggie scoring innings: she led off the first with a single then crossed the plate on a double steal with Leon, led off the fifth with an infield single before being forced at second, then plated Marissa Jauregui for an RBI single in the sixth. Leon reached on singles in the first, third and seventh. She got herself in scoring position as the potential equalizer in that final frame, but was thrown out on an outfield double play by Hornet freshman Aliyah Robles.

The remaining UC Davis hits belonged to first baseman Maddie Rojas and Jauregui. Maddie Rojas' two-out single in the fifth allowed the Aggies to tack on a run, cutting the Hornet lead to 3-2. Sacramento State countered with an RBI double off the bat of Mo Spieth in the bottom half of the fifth. Jauregui led off the sixth with a double to left, then moved up 60 feet on a Sommer Kisling sacrifice before coming home on Alyse Rojas' third hit.

Spieth went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Hornets. She had a two-run single in the third to give her team the lead, then added the double that pushed across the fourth Sac State run in the fifth.

Senior Katie Kibby started the game for the Aggies, surrendering four hits and three runs during her three innings of work. Freshman Kenedi Brown entered in relief, allowing two hits and just the one tally in the fifth.

UC Davis returns home to host the Capital Classic from Friday through Sunday. The Aggies host Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, Texas State, UConn and Utah State, playing two games a day for the weekend.
