PEORIA, Ariz. — Senior
Rei Nakatani enjoyed a solid opening day at the Westbrook Spring Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin, by posting respective rounds of 1-under 71 and 4-under 68. Currently tied for eighth, she led the Aggies' quintet through the first 36 holes of the tournament.
No team enjoyed a bigger improvement between rounds than UC Davis — one of 15 teams competing in Peoria, Ariz., ranked among the top 100 in the nation according to Golfweek/Sagarin's recent listing. Following its opening-round 296, the group finished its second tour of the Vistas Course at Westbrook Village Golf Club in 14 fewer strokes, and will enter Monday's final round alongside Notre Dame with matching scores of 578 (+2).
After shooting birdie-bogey on holes 2 and 3, during the second round, Nakatani ended the front nine with three straight birdies. Her stellar round continued with eight pars and a birdie on 13 to finish 1-under through back nine, and 4-under on the round.
Jackie Lucena also enjoyed a phenomenal second round by earning birdies on five holes and pars on the other 13. By finishing the front- and back-nine at 3- and 5-under, Lucena is tied for 27th, and within striking distance of the top 10 — a group that includes her teammate.
The Aggies are slated to open the final round at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Oklahoma will enter the final day of action in first place at 25-under (551), one shot ahead of Mississippi State. Nine shots separate the Bulldogs from College of Charleston, the tournament's third-place team that posted a 15-under (561).
Denver's Anna Zanusso leads the individual leaderboard by one shot over Nebraska's Katie Smith. Zanusso shot 69 and 61 — the lowest individual round on Sunday — to finish 14-under (130) through 36 holes.
