UC Davis closes action at the Golden State Classic

Aggies fall to LIU, 3-1 in Sunday morning game

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. -- Senior Katie Kibby provided 3.2 innings of scoreless relief while five different Aggies each earned a base hit, but UC Davis ultimately pushed across just one run in a 3-1 loss to Long Island, concluding action at the Golden State Classic softball tournament at Rosetta Canyon Park Sunday.

The Aggies fall to 6-4 for the season.

Alyse Rojas, Isabella Leon, Maddie Rojas, Riley Siegel and Sommer Kisling each had hits in the game. Kibby entered the contest in the fourth in place of freshman starter Kenedi Brown, then proceeded to allow no hits and just one walk to finish the game.

Brown pitched well in the first three frames, allowing just one hit and a walk, but a three-run homer by Blackbird center fielder Ryleigh Bermea opened up the scoring. Kibby assumed the circle immediately after the blast, then coaxed two air outs to get the Aggies out of the inning.

UC Davis scored its only run in its bottom half of the fourth: Marissa Jauregui reached on a fielder's choice when pinch runner Alyssa Ito was retired on the basepaths, then scored just two pitches later on Kisling's single. The Aggies previously put a runner in scoring position in third, then did likewise in the fifth, but ultimately stranded them there for no additional runs.

The relatively quiet bats on Sunday stood as a departure for UC Davis, which batted .324 with a .541 team slugging in five games for the weekend. Alyse Rojas led the charge overall, finishing the tourney at .684/.714/1.316 thanks to 13-for-19 hitting, a double, a triple and three home runs. She also scored nine runs while stealing 5-for-5 in the five games.

The Golden State Classic, hosted by San Jose State in Lake Elsinore, is the second of five tournaments for UC Davis in the first half of the 2020 season. The Aggies return to the Inland Empire for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City this Friday and Saturday.
