SAN JOSE, Calif. – It took nearly 50 minutes for San José State to score the first goal of Saturday night's match at Spartan Soccer Complex, and less than two for the Aggies to tie the score and take the lead for good in a game that UC Davis won by a 3-1 score.
That victory improved the team's overall record to 4-3-1; SJSU fell to 0-6 with that result.
"It's hard to win games at the Division I level," said head coach
Dwayne Shaffer. "But we showed our true character tonight."
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead, and held onto that advantage until
Luke Hazel set up
Jye Citizen's inaugural goal as an Aggie. With his shot, taken in the 72nd minute, Citizen evened the score at one apiece.
But that tie only lasted 92 seconds before
Wumi Aladetimi found
Adam Mickelson, who promptly drilled a shot past SJSU goalkeeper Rodrigo Reyes-Zavalza for the game-winning goal.
A late SJSU own goal pushed the Aggies' lead to the game's final score. However, even without that miscue, the Spartans were rocked by UC Davis' quick-strike attack, which turned their one-goal lead into a one-goal deficit within a blink of an eye, and never regained their rhythm.
The Aggies were the definition of efficient on offense Saturday night since each of their three shots on goal found the back of the net. On the opposite half of the field, netminder
Wallis Lapsley made one brilliant stop after another, and finished with eight saves.
"(Wallis) Lapsley was outstanding in goal tonight, and made some nice saves in the second half," Shaffer added.
Men's soccer's program-long eight-match road swing stop at Saint Mary's on Thursday before continuing Saturday at Oregon State. Those two matches precede the team's final non-conference contest, which will take place on Oct. 5 at cross-Causeway rival Sacramento State.
