No. 4 UC Davis rolls to 41-13 victory in home opener

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis defense racked up seven sacks to help the No. 4 Aggies to a 41-13 win over Lehigh at home Saturday afternoon.
 
The non-conference victory advanced UC Davis' record to 2-1 on the season.
 
Senior communication major Jake Maier led UC Davis' passing attack with 389 yards through the air, tossing four touchdowns without throwing an interception.
 
Sophomore biochemistry and molecular biology major Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. paced the Aggies rushing attack by accumulating 56 yards and one touchdown over the course of the game. Freshman cognitive science major Daniel McFadden also added 28 yards on the ground, averaging 7 yards per carry.
 
Sophomore design major Carson Crawford hauled in nine catches for 148 yards and one score. Junior human development major Jared Harrell made his presence felt in the passing game, recording two receptions for 58 yards.
 
Freshman Nick Eaton led the UC Davis defensive effort, totaling four tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups, and one forced fumble. Freshman Da'Von Frazier added four tackles and 3.0 TFL and senior sociology major Nas Anesi had 1.0 TFL, one sack, and one recovered fumble in the win.

 

UC Davis took a 7-0 lead over Lehigh after scoring the first points of the game on the opening drive of the game. Junior sociology major Khris Vaughn caught a two-yard touchdown reception from Maier with 11:37 remaining in the first quarter to cap a 10-play, 60-yard scoring drive. Senior communication major Max O'Rourke tacked on the extra point.
 
UC Davis increased the lead to 14-0 with another score. The Aggies capped an 11-play, 94-yard scoring drive when senior managerial economics major Wes Preece hauled in a four-yard touchdown reception from Maier with 2:35 left in the first quarter. O'Rourke converted the extra point attempt.
 
UC Davis' lead kept building after they put points on the board again to bring their advantage to 21-0. Jr. Gilliam powered in a three-yard touchdown run with 6:22 remaining in the second quarter to finish off a two-play, 30-yard drive. O'Rourke's extra point attempt was good.
 
UC Davis continued to extend its lead, scoring again to go up 28-0. The Aggies finished off a seven-play, 23-yard scoring drive when junior sociology major Tehran Thomas ran in a one-yard touchdown with 8:42 remaining in the third quarter. O'Rourke tacked on the PAT.
 
UC Davis continued to increase its advantage, scoring again to go on top 34-0. Maier hit C. Crawford for a 24-yard touchdown reception with 2:43 remaining in the third quarter to cap a six-play, 57-yard drive. The PAT attempt was no good.
 
UC Davis kept the Mountain Hawks off the scoreboard before extending their advantange, getting back in their scoring ways with a seven-play, 70-yard scoring drive that culminated in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Maier to Vaughn with 12:39 left in the fourth quarter. O'Rourke made the PAT attempt to give the Aggies the 41-0 lead. UC Davis didn't score again and Lehigh tacked on 13 more points to finish off the scoring.
 
The Aggies won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing two turnovers while coughing the ball up one time. UC Davis also had an outstanding day offensively, totaling 510 total yards, 91 on the ground and 419 through the air, while averaging 5.7 yards per play and out-gaining Lehigh.
 
UC Davis' defense was tough against the run, limiting Lehigh to only 58 yards on the ground. UC Davis out-rushed Lehigh by 33 yards. The Aggies defense owned Lehigh's backfield all game, collecting seven sacks and 13 total tackles for loss.
 
UC Davis' offense made the most of its trips to the red zone, scoring 28 points on six red zone appearances.
