After two road games to start its 101st football season, No. 5/4 UC Davis returns to the friendly confines of UC Davis Health Stadium to host the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh, members of the Patriot League.
Who: Lehigh
When: Saturday, September 14 • 7:05 p.m.
Where: Davis, Calif.
Venue: UC Davis Health Stadium (10,743)
While the Aggie women's lacrosse team frequently faces Lehigh, only long-time football fans will recognize the university's name among UC Davis circles: it has been 42 years since the first and only meeting between the two teams... The Mountain Hawks visited Toomey Field for a nationally televised NCAA semifinal game on December 3, 1977, and came away with a 39-30 victory en route to their only NCAA title... The game was one of three sellout crowds at Toomey that year, and featured a command performance from Far Western Conference Player of the Year future NFL quarterback Mike Moroski: a career-high 353 passing yards and four touchdown passes (Wally Loving twice, Steve Griffin and Tib Belza)... That 1977 season marked the Aggies' first-ever NCAA tournament run, although the team had previously made an NCAA College Division bowl game in 1972.
UC DAVIS LAST WEEK
UC Davis handed San Diego its first home loss since 2017, although in exciting fashion... The game was tied three times, with the Toreros even taking a 35-31 lead midway in the fourth... Sophomore RB
Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr. converted a key fourth down in the red zone then punched in a 1-yard TD to restore the Aggie lead at 38-35... With 0:02 left and USD apparently en route to scoring a game-winning touchdown pass, sophomore CB
Devon King hit RB Emilio Martinez for a forced fumble at the goal line... The officiating crew engaged in a brief – and for both sets of fans, thrilling – deliberation before determining that King had jarred the ball loose in front of the goal line for a game-saving turnover... King also had an interception at the Aggie 5-yard line in the second quarter, while his goal-line stand was one of seven tackles on the day... He earned Co-Big Sky ROOT SPORTS Defensive Player of the Week honors for his performance.
Gilliam rushed for 135 yards – just three off his career high – while
Jake Maier enjoyed his 16th career 300-yard passing performance... In fact, Maier has three against USD: 369 as a sophomore, 302 last year, and 359 on Saturday... Senior TE
Wes Preece posted his first career 100-yard receiving game: 5-for-118 yards, including a 35-yarder that put UC Davis in the red zone and resulted in the first of Gilliam's two TD runs... Junior LB
Connor Airey led the defense with 9 total tackles (6-3-9), while CB
Jordan Perryman posted his first collegiate interception... Perryman's pick led to directly to WR
Carson Crawford's 37-yard TD pass to TE Matt Hyman (see also DOUBLE TROUBLE in the notes below)... That was also Hyman's first Aggie TD, and his longest reception other than a 38-yarder set in 2018 against – oh yes – USD.
LEHIGH LAST WEEK
The Mountain Hawks (0-2) hung in early in Saturday's 38-10 loss against No. 24 Villanova, pulling to within a 17-10 deficit on a 42-yard TD reception by junior WR Jorge Portorreal... However, the Wildcats responded with three unanswered touchdowns to finish... Lehigh had previously lost a 14-13 heartbreaker against Saint Francis, surrendering a touchdown with 1:17 left.
The Mountain Hawks held 'Nova to 172 passing yards on 25 drops, but allowed 227 net rushing yards and 7.6 yards per carry... Individually, Tyler Monaco completed 23 of 43 for 253 yards and the TD to Portorreal, who led LU with 7-for-91 receiving... Senior LB Keith Woetzel, the team's leading tackler in each of the 2017 and 2018 seasons, continued that trend with 13 total stops (6 solo, 7 assist).
JAKE MAIER RECORD WATCH
The senior quarterback and communication major climbed both the school's career attempts and career completions leaderboard during the USD win… His 1,078 attempts slid him past J.T. O'Sullivan (1,070 from 1998-01) for third, while his 718 completions moves him into second, 37 behind record-holder Randy Wright (2010-13).
Maier also needs just 89 passing yards to move ahead of Jon Grant (2003-06) for third on the school's career leaderboard… Next on the list after Grant will be Randy Wright (2010-13) at 8,799… Maier worked with both Grant and Wright during the team's QB Academy day camps last spring… For a full summary of Maier's ascent up various UC Davis career lists, see page 17 of the official game notes.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Sophomore WR
Carson Crawford both caught and passed for a touchdown in Saturday's win at USD... He collected a 4-yarder from
Jake Maier just 67 seconds into the game, then hit TE Matt Hyman for a 37-yard strike to put the Aggies up in the second quarter... Crawford is the first non-QB to throw for a UC Davis TD since RB Gabe Manzanares hit TE Mark Martindale at Northern Arizona (11/8/14).
Crawford is also the first Aggie to both throw for and catch a touchdown pass since a 9/23/06 game at Youngstown State... Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Tony Kays hauled in a 22-yarder from Jon Grant, then threw a 38-yarder to Kale Turner... Crawford's two-way ability should not be surprising: he switched from WR to QB as a senior at Beaverton HS, then threw for 37 TDs to earn Metro League Offensive Player of the Year honors.
PIC-KING AND TA-KING
Sophomore DB
Devon King has already more than lived up to the Freshman All-America status he received in 2018... He is one of 12 players in FCS who have two interceptions thus far in 2019, and one of six who have one in each of the first two games... Between the two picks and the memorable forced fumble to end the USD win, King is responsible for three of the Aggies' seven takeaways in the first two games this year.
BO KNOWS...
No, not Bo Jackson, but rather 1983 All-American safety Bo Eason, who released a self-help book called There's No Plan B for Your A-Game on September 3... Eason played on the 1982 NCAA finalist team with current head coach
Dan Hawkins, then earned AP All-America status as a senior to earn a second-round draft selection by the Houston Oilers the following spring...Â
Eason played in the league for four years, earning a second-team All-Pro nod in 1985, then entered the world of acting... He holds 16 television and film credits but his best work came on stage with a heralded one-man play called Runt of the Litter... Eason then became a renowned motivational speaker and personal coach... Some 35 years after his graduation from UC Davis, Eason's book helps readers maximize success in all aspects of their lives... He recently appeared as a guest on the juggernaut podcast, The Adam Carolla Show, making him the second former UC Davis student-athlete (along with MMA star Urijah Faber) to appear on that program.
Eason will be honored as the second player (after his 1982 teammate Ken O'Brien) to be enshrined on the Aggie Pride Wall at UC Davis Health Stadium... The dedication will take place during the October 26 home game against Weber State, with an exclusive book-signing event the day before at the Avid Reader in downtown Davis.
THE KEELAN DOSS SAGA
The Aggies' three-year All-American receiver from 2016-18,
Keelan Doss was signed as a undrafted free agent by his hometown team, the Oakland Raiders, immediately following last spring's NFL Draft... In the first three weeks of the 2019 preseason, Doss hauled in 11 receptions (t9th in the NFL) with 99 yards and a touchdown... Doss' journey through the Raiders' camp has featured heavily in the 14th season of HBO's documentary series Hard Knocks... The second episode (airdate: Aug. 13) particularly centered around the Aggie organizational studies grad, and even featured his August 5 visit to UC Davis Health Stadium.Â
Ultimately, Doss did not make the Raiders' 53-man roster and was placed on waivers... On Monday, Sept. 2, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced they had acquired Doss for their 10-man practice squad... The following Saturday, the Raiders announced the release of controversial seven-time Pro Bowler Antonio Brown, a move that vacated a WR spot on the 53-man roster... This also began a bidding war for Doss between Oakland and Jacksonville, according to NFL Network's Mike Garofalo, with the Jags even offering the Aggie All-American a full active-roster salary (almost twice the typical practice-squad salary)...Â
As of Sunday night, the Twittersphere rumors were that Doss had re-signed with Oakland for a $300,000 signing bonus to go with his base rookie salary... Doss effectively confirmed the scuttlebutt on his Twitter account, and the Raiders officially announced his signing on Monday, September 7.
