Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Matt Murphy

Defense leads Aggies in season opening win

Davis, Calif. - Junior Nicola Prebble scored the first goal of the season off an assist by freshman Grace Austin and UC Davis took Sunday's regular season opener over Quinnipiac 1-0 to officially kick off 2019.

Prebble's goal came at the 12:09 mark of the first quarter when a stout Aggie defense took over and held Quinnipiac scoreless the rest of the way, withstanding five Bobcats shots in the the fourth period but allowing just two in first half.

Senior Chelsea Bigelow recorded four saves in front of the cage in her season debut as the Aggies also overcame a slew of cards in the second half. Both Austin and fellow freshman Danielle Yau received yellow cards in the second half but the Aggies showed off their improved depth in sustaining those timeouts and keeping the game in hand. The Aggies and Bobcats also received a green card each in the third quarter.

With Sunday's win, UC Davis moved to 6-4 all-time when opening the season at home and have now opened the season with wins twice in the tenure of Head Coach Britt Broady, who is in her third season at UC Davis.

It will be some time before the Aggies see game action on their home turf again as the team is set for a four-game swing in Michigan to start the month.

UC Davis will play three games in East Lansing at Michigan State beginning with Sept. 5's matchup with Ball State. The Aggies will then see Michigan State on Sept. 6, Louisville on Sept. 9, and stop in for a date with Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant on Sept. 10.

UC Davis also has multi-game trips to Virginia and Iowa planned before finally returning home to face Central Michigan on Oct. 8 at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
