Extra-base swings power Aggies past Titans, 3-1

FULLERTON, Calif. -- UC Davis rode a two-run fifth inning to victory on Friday, May 3, beating Cal State Fullerton by the score of 3-1.

With Friday evening's win, the Aggies snapped an 11-game skid against the Titans, which began back in 2015, in addition to notching the first UC Davis victory at Goodwin Field since May 4, 2014 when the Aggies downed the Titans also by a 3-1 margin.

The triumph brings UC Davis' overall record to 16-23 on the season, 7-9 in the Big West. Sophomore Brett Erwin earned his fifth win of the year for the Aggies, bringing his record to 5-3. The loss for Cal State Fullerton drops their 2019 mark to 18-23, 5-8 in the conference, as well as Sophomore Tanner Bibee's record to 5-7.

Erwin started on the mound for UC Davis and went six innings, giving up one run on four hits with two walks and two punch-outs. The Aggies then went to the bullpen, bringing in sophomore Tim Wieser to replace Erwin. Wieser threw 2.1 shutout innings, allowing three hits, along with one walk and four strikeouts, before junior Steve Ouellette took over. Ouellette finished the game for UC Davis, securing the contest's final two outs without allowing a run while giving up no hits, walking none, and striking out one. Ouellette also picked up his fifth save on the year for the Aggies.

UC Davis pitchers altogether allowed the one Cal State Fullerton run on seven hits, walking three and striking out seven. The Aggies were helped by their excellent pitching in pressure situations, as they limited Cal State Fullerton hitters to 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

In the batter's box, UC Davis was paced by sophomore Tanner Murray, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI while walking once. Sophomore Spencer Gedestad put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Sophomore Joseph Myers also contributed for the Aggies, going 2-for-3 with a double. Senior Jairus Richards led the attack for the Cal State Fullerton lineup, going 2-for-3 with a double on the day.

As a group, UC Davis scored three runs, but left chances on the board, stranding eight over the course of the game. Those three runs came on nine hits, four of which went for extra bases. The Aggies supplemented their attack by drawing three walks from Cal State Fullerton pitchers.

The Aggies and the Titans resume action tomorrow (May 4) at Goodwin Field beginning at 2 p.m. in Fullerton, Calif.
