Aggie bats fall silent as No. 7 Gauchos take series

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- UC Davis fell to UC Santa Barbara on Friday by a final score of 7-0. The loss comes despite the effort from sophomore Spencer Gedestad, who went 1-for-1 with a double in this Big West match-up in Santa Barbara, Calif.

UC Davis drops to 11-20 on the year, 3-8 in Big West play. Freshman Jake Spillane took the loss for the Aggies. His record moves to 1-2 this season. UC Santa Barbara, on the other hand, improves to 29-5, 7-1 in-conference, with the victory. With the win, Sophomore Jack Dashwood's 2019 mark advances to 6-0.

UC Davis started Spillane on the bump, and he went five innings, giving up seven runs, all of them earned, on nine hits, walking two and striking out two. The Aggies then turned to the bullpen, bringing in junior Wyatt Tucker for the final three innings of the contest. Tucker yielded no runs on two hits, fanning two and walking one.

The two UC Davis pitchers worked their way through the UC Santa Barbara lineup facing 37 hitters, retiring 13 via flyout. The Aggies were helped by their excellent pitching in pressure situations, as they limited UC Santa Barbara hitters to 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Gedestad led the way offensively for UC Davis, going 1-for-1 with a double. UC Santa Barbara's offensive attack was led by freshman Kyle Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs on the day.

All told, the Aggies managed three hits, one of which went for extra bases. UC Davis didn't get any extra help from UC Santa Barbara pitchers either, as they didn't draw a walk in the ballgame.

The Aggies will take the field again tomorrow (Apr. 20) at 1 p.m. PT as they wrap up this weekend's series at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara.
