DAVIS, Calif. — On a blustery day with winds gusting over 20 miles per hour, the Aggies earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over the visiting Nevada Wolfpack on Friday afternoon. Breaking a two-match losing streak to the Pack, the Aggies allowed Nevada to gain the early lead at 2-0, before storming back to take the match with four singles wins.
In doubles play, Nevada won on court one, before the Aggie duo of Kristina Breisacher and Jessica Walker saved two match points en route to stealing a 7-5 win on court three. With the doubles resting on court two, Nevada proved to be too tough, taking the match in a tiebreaker and grabbing the doubles point in the process.
Transitioning into singles play, the match at No. 5 wrapped up in favor of the Wolfpack, but the Aggies buckled down and raised their level to overcome extreme winds and adverse conditions. Dropping the first set on courts one, two, and six, the match was leaning towards the visiting team, but UC Davis proved otherwise. Breisacher jumped out to a set and 4-1 lead over Anastaysha Gorbacheva on court four, before Gorbacheva hit a hot streak. Shirley Hall managed to come back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set to win it in a tiebreaker, and capitalized upon opportunities in the second to steal the first UC Davis point away from teammate Breisacher, as she was the first Aggie win at 7-6(3), 6-1. Breisacher was soon after, playing tough tennis to overcome a fiery opponent, closing the match at 7-5 in the second set.
With the match tied at 2-2 overall, the three remaining matches were locked in battle. Sara Tsukamoto turned her game around after dropping the first set 1-6 by storming to a gutsy 6-4 second set win, while teammate Kelsie Bryant fought back from a set and 4-5 down to break serve to take the lead. At this time, Nikita Pradeep was wrapping up her first set, having barely dropped it at 9-11 in the tiebreaker.
Bryant jumped out to a quick lead in the third set, and won nine straight games to claim her fifth win of her last six matches, to put the Aggies within a point of the overall match. Tsukamoto had all the momentum on her court, and dug deep to pull off a 6-3 third set to clinch the overall victory for the Aggies with her fourth consecutive win.
Pradeep had come back to win the second set, and had just taken the first game of the third set at the clinch.
The Aggies will face a quick turnaround, returning to Marya Welch Tennis Center Saturday, April 13, at 11 AM to host the UC Riverside Highlanders in a Big West Conference matchup.
