Mustangs steal series opener, 5-1

DAVIS, Calif. -- Despite picking up seven hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Cal Poly, UC Davis was unable to push across more runs, as they lost to CP by the score of 5-1 on Friday, April 12.

UC Davis drops to 10-16 on the year, 3-4 in Big West play. Sophomore Brett Erwin took the loss for the Aggies. His record moves to 3-3 this season. Cal Poly, on the other hand, improves to 14-17, 5-2 in-conference, with the victory. With the win, Senior Michael Clark's 2019 mark advances to 2-1.

UC Davis started sophomore Brett Erwin on the bump, and he went five innings, surrendering five runs, all of them earned, on five hits, walking one and fanning three. The Aggies then turned to the bullpen, bringing in sophomore Tim Wieser for the final four innings of the contest. Wieser allowed no runs on one hit, fanning three and walking one.

The two UC Davis pitchers worked their way through the Cal Poly lineup facing 40 hitters, retiring 17 via flyout.

Junior Alejandro Lara led the way offensively for UC Davis, going 2-for-3 with an RBI along with a walk. Sophomore Tanner Murray provided a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4. Cal Poly's offense was led by freshman Conagher Sands, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs on the day.

As a group, UC Davis plated one run, but left chances on the board, stranding six over the course of the game. That one run came on seven hits, none of which went for extra bases. The Aggies didn't get any extra help from Cal Poly pitchers either, as they drew only one walk.

The Aggies and the Mustangs return to Phil Swimley Field tomorrow (Apr. 13) for game two of the series scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. PT.
