STANFORD, Calif. — In a match that had been rescheduled twice before, and was called into question this afternoon due to a midday pouring of rain, UC Davis finally traveled to the Bay Area to face defending 2018 NCAA National Champion No. 7 Stanford, but fell 7-0.
Boasting the highest number of nationally-ranked players of any women's collegiate team in the nation, the Cardinal featured its main lineup, but the matches were closer than the scores appeared.
Competing on the Taube South courts, the Cardinal claimed No. 3 doubles 6-1, but UC Davis kept Stanford on the ropes until the end, as Kelsie Bryant and Sara Tsukamoto took on No. 12 Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee, and Shirley Hall and Nikita Pradeep played No. 18 Michaela Gordon and Emily Arbuthnott. The Aggies fell in competitive scores in both, 6-3 and 6-4, respectively.
In singles play, Stanford swept all six matches in straight sets, but each court hosted a battle of its own. Hall pushed No. 58 Lampl in the first set, but ultimately fell 6-3, 6-1, while Pradeep took on No. 28 Michaela Gordon, the 2018 ITA Rookie of the Year, falling 6-2, 6-2.
Continuing the spring break schedule, the Aggies return to Marya Welch Tennis Center on Friday, Mar. 29, to host future Big West opponent UC San Diego at 10 AM. Friday will feature an Aggie tennis doubleheader, as the men are set to host Northern Arizona at 1 PM.
