Aggies complete the sweep with shutout finale win

DAVIS, Calif. — Redshirt junior managerial economics major Logan Denholm tied the all-time program record for doubles in a single game--notching two in the second and one in the sixth--while senior left-hander Chris Brown scattered five hits and struck out a career-best six over seven innings of work in his debut appearance for the Aggies. After taking a commanding 9-0 lead in the third following a seven-run effort in the second, UC Davis breezed to a 12-0 shutout win over Northern Colorado to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon at Phil Swimley Field in Davis, Calif.

The Aggies improved to a 3-0 overall mark, while the Bears slipped to 0-3 on the season. UC Davis will look to take on Nevada in its first mid-week clash of the season this Tuesday (Feb. 19) at 2 p.m.

Brown (1-0) was credited with the win for UC Davis after scattering five hits and striking out a career-best six over seven innings on the mound for a 0.00 ERA in his first appearance of the season. Freshman newcomer Jake Spillane took over in the eighth, allowing just one hit and striking out one, while fellow freshman Nathan Lemos capped off the afternoon with one inning of scoreless, hitless relief, striking out one in his debut performance.

George Thompson (0-1) suffered the loss for Northern Colorado after surrendering six runs on two hits over 1.2 innings—one of five hurlers to take the mound for the Bears on the afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning by both squads, the UC Davis offense came out swinging in the bottom of the second—an inning that saw 11 Aggies to the plate. Denholm got things started with a double to left center, but quickly made his way back to the dugout after attempting for a triple. A pair of walks and a single by Cooper Morrison would help turn the tide for the Aggies, while two more walks and a hit batter would give UC Davis a 3-0 advantage and force the Bears to look to their bullpen. Another hit by pitch would keep the bases loaded for Denholm's second at bat of the inning, this time driving in three with a double to left field. He finished the series 5-for-9 at the plate with seven RBI and four runs scored.

The Aggies would tack two more in the third, highlighted by an RBI single from senior Garret Kelly. The Hollister, Calif.-native would go on to finish 2-for-3 on the afternoon, bringing his weekend totals to 5-for-9 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored.

The Northern Colorado bats remained silent as Brown continued to pound the strike zone retiring 10 of the next 15 batters faced, and backed by a pair of double plays from the UC Davis defense.

UC Davis would score its final three runs of the day in the sixth, taking advantage of a costly error by the Northern Colorado outfield with an RBI double by Denholm, RBI-single by senior Caleb Van Blake, and sacrifice fly by senior Cameron Briggs

Sunday's game also marked the debut appearance in an Aggie uniform for Lemos, freshman Conner Longrie, junior John Mook, and Spillane.

UC Davis resumes action at Phil Swimley Field this Tuesday (Feb. 19) hosting Nevada at 2 p.m.
