IRVINE, Calif. – Janessa Staab opened Sunday's Big West Conference game at Anteater Stadium by scoring her second goal of the season six minutes into the game, but consecutive goals from UC Irvine prevented the Aggies from winning their third in a row in Irvine, and allowed the host Anteaters to record a 2-1 win.
UC Davis will now return home for Thursday's Big West home opener with a 5-7 overall and 0-2 league mark. UC Irvine will continue its season at 3-9 and 2-0.
It was a free kick that gave Staab an opportunity to score the game's inaugural goal, and she did just that when her attempt from 30 yards beat UCI's goalkeeper on the first attempt recorded by the Aggies.
Of UC Davis' seven shots, four were earned throughout the second half.
Janae Gonzalez nearly tied the game in the 55th minute, but saw Maddie Newsom record another save on that play.
A flurry of activity took place in front of the Anteaters' goal throughout a six-minute chink of game time late in the second half. Following back-to-back shots from
Ana Williams,
Alana Curtis tested Newsom on her first attempt of the afternoon, which sailed past the post in the 79th minute.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, those three shots were the last ones recorded by either team, and the Anteaters hung on to earn a positive result on their Senior Day.
UC Davis' first two league home games will take place this upcoming week, starting with Thursday's 4 p.m. tilt vs. UC Santa Barbara. The Aggies' weekend will conclude on Sunday with a 2 p.m. matchup against Cal Poly.
