IRVINE, Calif. – UC Davis' and UC Irvine's defensive units controlled the pace of play for the first two-thirds of Wednesday night's Big West Conference match since it remained scoreless until the 68th minute when the Anteaters drew a penalty kick, and converted that opportunity for the only goal of the evening in a result that ended 1-0 in UCI's favor.
UC Davis will return home with an 8-4-1 overall and 2-1 Big West record, shift their attention towards starting another win streak since it entered Anteater Stadium with victories in its last five games. UC Irvine will continue its season at 5-4-5 and 2-0-1.
Max Arfsten nearly scored the equalizer with just under three minutes remaining, but saw Ford Parker thwart his attempt and come up with the save.
On the opposite side of the field,
Wallis Lapsley earned two of his three saves throughout the second half.
UC Davis students should arrive to Aggie Soccer Field early this weekend — the facility will open its doors one hour before kickoff — since Saturday's 3 p.m. home match is this season's UC Davis scarf giveaway, while supplies last.
That game will open a home-heavy portion of the Aggies' schedule that includes three games at Aggie Soccer Field out of their last four regular season events. After hosting UCSB on Oct. 23, UC Davis will head to Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 26 for its final road game of the season. One week later (Nov. 2), men's soccer will host Sacramento State in its regular season finale.
