UC Davis drops heartbreaker in home opener

DAVIS, Calif. — In their first home match of the season, the Aggies dropped a 4-3 deciding match to the San Francisco Dons.

UC Davis jumped out to a quick start, taking the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3. Nikita Pradeep and Shirley Hall are 2-1 at No. 2, while Kristina Breisacher and Isabella von Ebbe saw action for the first time this season to clinch the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.

Once in singles, Hall cruised through Shana Dos Santos 6-2, 6-3 for a 2-0 team lead. San Francisco got on the board with a win at No. 6, before Pradeep delivered a straight set win at No. 1 to bump the Aggies to 3-1.

The Dons were not done, however, as they took the match on court No. 2 for a 3-2 overall score, in favor of the Aggies, with No. 3 and No. 4 locked into tough matches.

In Breisacher's first singles match since the 2018 dual season, she faced San Francisco's Alexa Meyer, but fell 6-3 in the third set, putting the match on teammate von Ebbe's shoulders. Von Ebbe, having only played one complete match since the 2018 dual season as well, battled back against Margarita Treyes, taking the second set 6-4 to force a third and decisive set.

With nearly the entire set to play, both teams clustered around the court, watching as Treyes got a quick start, and led 3-0. Von Ebbe fought back to even the match at 3-3, but was unable to overcome the Dons, and fell 3-6, for a 4-3 team loss.

UC Davis will head into Saturday's matchup against defending NCAA Champion and No. 1 ranked team Stanford with a 0-3 record, before closing the weekend against regional rival Santa Clara on Sunday.
