SACRAMENTO — Just 48 hours after notching her first career point in the Aggies' win over Cal Baptist, freshman defender
Margot Ridgeway came up with the first game-winning goal of her career on Sunday afternoon, scoring with just under three minutes remaining in regulation to help lift UC Davis to a, 2-1, victory over host Sacramento State at Hornet Field.
The Aggies improved to 2-2 overall on the season with the win, claiming victory in back-to-back matches for the first time since winning three straight from Sept. 28-Oct. 12 last season and improving to 8-1-3 in their last 12 meetings with the Hornets.
Sacramento State, which was limited to only four shots against a stingy UC Davis defense, fell to 0-3-1 overall with the defeat.
Ridegway's winner came in the 88th minute on her team's 11th corner kick of the afternoon. Junior biomedical engineering major
Hailey Rittershofer, who tallied the game-winning score against Cal Baptist on Friday, lofted a ball into the box and found the head of Ridgeway, who skied above the defense to put the ball home to break the 1-1 tie.
The Hornets' Julia Herrera had one last attempt 80 seconds later, but the UC Davis defense blocked it away and the Aggies ran out the clock to secure the victory.
Following a scoreless first 45 minutes that saw UC Davis take five of the six shots in the period, the Aggies got on the board first just six minutes into the second half. Senior biological sciences major
Kristie Braken-Guelke sent a ball into traffic in the box that got lost in the shuffle and found its way past the Sacramento State keeper for the 1-0 lead.
It was the first career score for the Los Gatos, Calif., native, who became the third different Aggie to find the back of the net this season.
The Hornets countered 15 minutes later in the 67th minute as Bonnie Ford and Kylee Kim-Bustillos put together a nice string of passes before finding the feet of Erika Sosa, who chopped a ball over the line from the right side of the box to tie the score at one apiece.
UC Davis finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots, led by three from sophomore international relations major
Mahlah Catline, and an 11-0 lead in corners on the day while serving as the aggressor, collecting 17 fouls to only eight for the host side. Senior materials science and engineering major
Alexis Smith finished with two saves in net in the win.
After Sunday's trip across the Causeway, the Aggies return home for their next three matches beginning Friday (Aug. 31) at 5 p.m. against New Mexico at Aggie Soccer Field in the second half of a doubleheader with the men's team. UC Davis then closes out the weekend against San Diego State on Sunday (Sept. 2) at 2 p.m.
