UC Davis secures sixth straight Causeway Cup title

May 17, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. — After collecting wins over Sacramento State in seven of 16 events, UC Davis won the Causeway Cup, an all-sports competition between local rivals. The Aggies secured their sixth Cup title, in as many years, by a margin of 42.5-32.5.

The Aggies' 10-point win is the closest margin of victory since the Hornets claimed the Cup for the 2011-12 season thanks to its five-point margin, 52.5-47.5.

Each of the schools' 17 common teams usually compete against each other at least once during the year with the winner earning a pre-determined amount of points (5). If the two schools meet just once in a season, then all the points will go to the winning team. But if the teams play each other two or more times, the points are divided by how many meetings occur.

For example, if the two baseball teams play each other twice in the upcoming year, each meeting is worth 2.5 points.

Despite a long-standing rivalry between the two schools, the Causeway Cup has only been in existence for 14 years.  Since the Cup's inaugural year in the 2004-05 season, UC Davis has won this all-sport rivalry competition 10 times.

After dropping the first two events of the season, UC Davis bounced back with three head-to-head wins in men's soccer, men's cross country, and women's cross country to take a 15-10 lead. After Sacramento State tied the overall score once fall competition concluded, back-to-back wins in men's and women's basketball, in addition to a 194.525-194.400 gymnastics victory, allowed UC Davis to reclaim the lead for good.

Women's tennis then tacked on another five points to the Aggies' collection, which allowed UC Davis to reach the 37.5-point threshold needed to clinch the Cup.
