DAVIS, Calif. - Holding San Jose State scoreless through five full innings of play, UC Davis shut the door on the Spartans with a four-run effort in the sixth to claim its largest lead of the afternoon, 7-1. The Spartans would tack on two more in the eighth, but could not make up the rest of the deficit, lifting UC Davis to a 7-3 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
Junior infielder Cameron Briggs led the Aggies finishing 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored, while junior Caleb Van Blake finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored off a pair of doubles and a single. Junior right-hander Blake Hannah recorded his third career win for UC Davis after allowing just one hit over five innings of work on the mound.
The Aggies improve to 8-15 overall while the Spartans fall to a 10-17 mark.
The Aggies were first to get on the board for the second game in a row, taking a 1-0 lead in the second off a sacrifice fly from Alex Aguiar after Van Blake and Briggs recorded the Aggies' first two hits of the day with back-to-back singles.
UC Davis added on two more one-run innings in the fourth and fifth, the first off a single to right field by Briggs, the other on a fielder's choice to third base by Ryan Anderson, respectively.
Following five scoreless innings by San Jose State, the Spartans came within two of the Aggies in the sixth, scoring one run on two hits and stranding two.
But UC Davis would more than double its' run total in their half of the inning as eight different Aggies came to the plate. A double by Van Blake, a single from Briggs, and a hit-by-pitch at bat for Aguiar would put runners on every bag before freshman Tanner Murray drove in two with a single through the left side. Murray and Aguiar would make their way around the bases off a double down the left field line by senior Brad Pluschkell, capping off a four-run inning for UC Davis.
San Jose State would chip away at the deficit with a two-run effort in the eighth, but it would not be enough, resulting in a 7-3 victory for UC Davis.
Briggs paced the UC Davis offense with a 3-for-4 finish at the plate, coming around to score in the sixth and driving in the Aggies' second run of the game in the fourth.
Shane Timmons led the Spartans finishing 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in two with singles in the sixth and eighth innings. Of San Jose State's eight total hits, Timmons was the only Spartan to record more than one.
Hannah (1-3) was credited with his first win of the season--and third of his career--after giving up just one hit over five innings on the mound.
Tevin Cadola (0-2) suffered the loss for the Spartans after allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout over two innings of work-one of 10 hurlers to take the mound for San Jose State on Tuesday afternoon.
UC Davis is set to continue the rest of its four-game homestand on Friday (Apr. 6) hosting Big West rival, Hawaii, at 2:30 p.m. Game two of the series will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Apr. 7) followed by the finale on Sunday (Apr. 8) at 1 p.m.
