UC Davis rolls to second straight Big West series win

April 29, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. - In addition to clinching its second Big West series win of the season over Long Beach State on Sunday, the Aggies also tied the Division I school record for homers in a single game, after senior Ryan Hooper recorded a three-run round-tripper in the fourth and junior Ryan Anderson posted solo shots in the seventh and ninth. Junior left-hander Chris Brown earned his third win of the season after allowing just one run and scattering eight hits over a career-high eight innings of work on the mound, helping lift UC Davis to a 10-1 win over the Dirtbags on Sunday afternoon at Blair Field.

Ryan Anderson's two-homerun performance was enough to tie the Division I school record for homers in a single game. He became the seventh Aggie in Division I era history to do so since Austin March recorded two homers at Pacific on Apr. 26, 2015.

Anderson's and Hooper's combined three-homer total also tied the Division I school record for homers in a single game-the eleventh such performance from an Aggie lineup and the first since Apr. 26, 2015.

The Aggies improve to 15-23 on the season and 7-8 in Big West play, while the 49ers fell to 18-26 overall and 4-8 in league play. Of the Aggies' 13 hits, seven went for extra-bases, including five doubles.

Junior Chris Brown was credited with the win for UC Davis after allowing one run on eight hits and striking out two over a career-high eight innings of work. Chris Rivera (0-2) suffered the loss for the Dirtbags, charged with six earned run on eight hits while striking out four over 3.1 innings-one of five 49ers to take the mound on Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies were first score on Sunday afternoon after a single by Caleb Van Blake and a double by Cameron Briggs put runners on the corners, and set up a run-scoring groundout by Logan Denholm to make it 1-0 in the second.

The fourth would see 10 Aggies to the plate as UC Davis broke open the one-run game with a seven-run effort that began with four back-to-back hits, including a pair of doubles from Briggs and Denholm. A sacrifice bunt from Garret Kelly moved Denholm to third before a wild pitch made it 4-0, while a single through the left side from freshman Tanner Murray forced the Dirtbags to look to their bullpen. A stolen base, a wild pitch, and a walk put runners on the corners, but it was Hooper's three-run homer on the third pitch of the at bat that allowed UC Davis to shut the door on the Dirtbags as the Aggies jumped out to an 8-0 lead with six innings left to play.

The three-run shot marked the fourth homer of the season for Hooper-just two shy of his 2017 season total. Briggs finished 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while both Denholm and Hooper finished 1-for-4 with one run and three RBI.

The Aggies then tacked on another run in the eighth with a solo shot over the left field wall from Anderson to make it a 9-0 ball game.

But a double, a wild pitch, and RBI-single from Tristan Mercadel brought one run across for the Dirtbags, snapping seven innings of silence from the Long Beach lineup. Mercadel paced the Long Beach offense finished 3-for-4 with 1 RBI.

The Aggies ninth and final run of the afternoon came on yet another homer off the bat of Anderson, marking his fifth of the season-just one shy of his 2017 season total-and tying the Division I school record for homers in a single game.

With Saturday's 3-0 extra-inning win, the Aggies snapped a 10-game skid against the Dirtbags that began with a narrow one-run loss at Blair Field back on May 15, 2015. UC Davis is now on a two-game streak against the 49ers, the most since the Aggies posted back-to-back wins in 2012.

The Aggies return to action on Tuesday (May 1) with a mid-week clash at Saint Mary's. UC Davis won the first meeting of the home-and-home series with a 10-6 win at Dobbins Stadium on Mar. 26.
