Incoming Aggie nets Player of the Year honors

April 20, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. — In leading Walla Walla Community College to a 32-1 overall record — including 30 consecutive victories to end the year — and a Northwest Athletic Conference title, incoming UC Davis guard Cierra Jo McKeown has been named the Baden Sports/NWAC Player of the Year following a record-setting season.

McKeown, who signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career with the Aggies back in November, finished with 32 points, six rebounds, and five assists, in 40 minutes in the NWAC championship game, hitting 11-of-17 from the field and 9-of-12 from three-point range en route to tournament most valuable players honors.

She became the all-time leading scorer in Walla Walla Community College history with 22 points against Treasure Valley Community College on Feb. 28, ending her career with 1,387 points to break the mark set in 2010. For the season, McKeown averaged 23.6 points per game — including a school single-game record 45 points against Big Bend Community College in the NWAC semifinals that stood just two points shy of a tournament single-game record — while shooting 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from beyond the arc.

Her scoring average was a school single-season record and ranked second in the league, while her 779 points and 133 three-pointers made also set school marks. McKeown led the conference in three-point percentage, three-pointers made, field goals made (281), free throw percentage (.875), and points scored.

All this after a freshman season that saw her stand fifth in the NWAC at 21.0 ppg, shooting 44 percent from the field and 37 percent beyond the arc. She earned the east region’s freshman of the year award after helping the Warriors to a share of the NWAC East Region title and a berth in the NWAC championship game.

A four-time first-team all-conference and two-time first-team all-state selection at Touchet HS, McKeown averaged 25.9 ppg and 8.1 rpg to go along with 7.1 apg and 5.7 steals per game as a senior, one year after leading the state of Washington in scoring as a junior at 26.5 ppg to go with 9.6 rpg. Averaged a double-double as a sophomore with a prep-best 26.6 ppg and 10.0 rpg, eventually setting the school scoring record with 2,356 career points.
