RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior infielder Cameron Briggs finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of stolen bases and runs scored in game two of the Aggies' Big West Conference matchup against UC Riverside. But after a three-run effort from the Highlanders in the third inning, UC Riverside never looked back, resulting in a series clinching 6-2 victory over the Aggies on Friday night in Riverside, Calif.
The Aggies fall to 0-2 in Big West and 6-15 on the season, while the Highlanders are 2-0 in league play with a 12-10 mark overall.
The Highlanders were first to get on the board during game two at the Riverside Sports Complex on Friday evening, heading into the second with a 1-0 lead.
But the Aggies were quick to answer in the top of the second after junior Cameron Briggs gave UC Davis its first baserunner of the inning off a bunt down the first base line, then moved into scoring position thanks to his first stolen base of the season. An error by the Highlander infield allowed senior Ryan Hooper reach first safely before fellow senior Alex Aguiar tied the game at one apiece with an RBI-single to left field.
But another one-run inning by the Highlanders in their half of the second allowed UC Riverside to reclaim its one-run advantage before Connor Cannon's 3-run homer in the third boosted the Highlanders to a 5-1 lead over the Aggies. Cannon paced the Highlanders finishing 1-for-3 with one run scored and three RBI as six different Highlanders were responsible for UC Riverside's six-hit total on the night.
Trailing by four, the Aggies began to chip away at the deficit in the fourth after a single from Briggs and a double to left center from Hooper made it 5-2 in favor of the Highlanders. But the Aggies would not be able to make up the rest of the deficit, lifting UC Riverside to a 6-2 victory.
Freshman Jared Sasaki (2-2) suffered the loss for the Aggies after allowing five runs on five hits and striking out four over six innings of work. Relieving Sasaki in the seventh inning, Tim Wieser allowed one run on one hit over two innings on the mound.
Cole Percival (4-1) was credited with the win for the Highlanders after allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four over six innings of work, while Jared Morton recorded his fifth save of the season after providing UC Riverside with three innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
UC Davis is scheduled to wrap up with the series finale tomorrow (Mar. 31) at 1 p.m. before returning home to host the Spartans of San Jose State on Tuesday Apr. 3 at 2:30 p.m.
