UC Davis falls in series finale

March 18, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. - The Aggies kept the Bears in striking distance after erasing a three-run deficit with a trio of doubles in the sixth inning of Sunday's series finale, but a two-run eighth inning for the Bears would prove too much to overcome for UC Davis, resulting in a 5-3 win for Northern Colorado. The Bears tallied their second win of the series, 12-2, after completing the final four innings of Saturday's suspended game.

Along with the completion of Saturday's second game that was suspended due to darkness, UC Davis fell to 5-12 overall, as the Bears scored six more runs in the remaining innings. Northern Colorado improved to 14-7 overall with the two wins.

The two teams faced off on Sunday morning to complete their suspended contest from Saturday night, with action picking up in the top of the sixth inning and Northern Colorado holding a 6-2 lead.

The Bears opened with a four-run inning in the sixth as seven Bears came to the plate. The Aggies threatened in their half of the inning with two runners in scoring position, but could not convert.

Northern Colorado then tacked on two more off a 2-RBI single up the middle from Kiel in the seventh to give the Bears a 12-2 advantage.

But the fans at Swimley Field would see no other scores from either squad, resulting in a second win for the Bears to lead the series.

Freshman Joseph Myers led UC Davis finishing 2-for-4 including a lead-off single in the eighth, while fellow freshman Tanner Murray tallied an infield single to extend his hitting streak to six games. Jack Pauley finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and three runs scored to pace the Bears.

Blake Hannah (0-3) suffered the loss for the Aggies after allowing four runs on five hits, and striking out two across 0.2 innings of work.

Aaron Hamilton (2-2) was credited with the win for the Bears after allowing two runs on four hits, and striking out six over five innings.

Northern Colorado was first to break the silence in the second game of the day after posting a three-hit inning in the top of the third, including two doubles, for a 2-0 advantage over the Aggies.

The sixth would bring another three-hit inning for the Bears, extending their lead to 3-0.

But the Aggies found new life in their half of the sixth, beginning with a drawn walk by senior Ryan Hooper followed by a double to right center from fellow senior Brad Pluschkell. After a pitching change by the Bears, the UC Davis offense found its stride, scorching back-to-back doubles first to right center field then down the right field line off the bats of Ryan Anderson and Logan Denholm, respectively, tying the game at three runs apiece.

After both squads went quietly in the seventh, the Bears answered with a two-run effort in the eighth for a 5-3 lead over the Aggies.

UC Davis threatened in the ninth with back-to-back singles from Murray and Myers, but two strikeouts by Leedholm prevented the Aggies from closing the gap on the Bears, resulting in a 5-3 victory for Northern Colorado.

Matt Burkart, Tyler Yamaguchi, and Matt Zoba paced the Bears each finishing 2-for-3 on the day, accounting for a combined six of the Bears' 11 hits.

Murray finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon to lead the UC Davis offense and extend his hitting streak to seven.

Senior Daniel Barraza (1-2) suffered the loss for UC Davis, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out three over two innings of work. Barraza entered the game in relief of freshman starter Jared Sasaki, who allowed two runs on five hits, striking out three across five innings on the mound for the Aggies.

Austin Bergdahl (1-0) allowed one hit while striking out two in one inning of work for the Bears to earn the win, while Connor Leedholm was credited with his sixth save of the season, allowing two hits and striking out two over two innings on the mound.

UC Davis will return to action on Monday, Mar. 26 against Saint Mary's following a seven day break from competition. The Aggies will then travel to face California on Tuesday (Mar. 27) before opening Big West Conference play on the road at UC Riverside beginning on Mar. 29.
