DAVIS, Calif. - Don't let the records fool you. With both teams entering their final three games of the season jockeying for the best position within the Big West's standings, expect a fierce battle in Saturday's 5 p.m. home game between the Aggies and Highlanders.
Entering the weekend trailing first place UC Irvine by half a game, UC Davis needs additional victories to preserve its chance of winning another conference championship. If it wins out, it will earn at least a share of this year's regular season title. For UC Riverside, it is trying to earn a spot in this year's BWC Tournament, and will enter the Pavilion in eighth place, half a game ahead of CSUN for the event's final spot.
In recent seasons, this series has become one-sided with the Aggies winning six of the last seven vs. UCR. If these results hold, the Aggies will remain in contention for their third league crown in the last four seasons, with the Highlanders and Matadors competing for the final Tournament slot.
Make sure you are in your seats by 5 p.m. to help men's basketball recognize Jackson Manning, its honorary team captain for the game. The (now) 12-year-old was a former UC Davis Children's Hospital patient, whose life was saved during his 39-day stay at the facility. After re-learning how to walk and talk, this avid basketball fan, and his family, are tomorrow's guests of honor.
For the Aggies, Saturday's game is the first of a season-ending homestand that will conclude on Thursday with a 7 p.m. matchup vs. Hawai'i. Afterwards, they will head to UC Irvine next Saturday for its regular season finale, a game that may determine the league's champion and top Tournament seed.
Unlike the Aggies, who have a home-heavy finish to their schedule, the Highlanders will play two of their final three games on the road.
After starting league play with eight straight losses, UCR won three of its last five games -- which includes a win at Hawai'i and at home vs. Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday -- to become a contender for postseason play. However, the Highlanders will face an Aggie squad that won six of their last eight, including last week's road sweep at Cal Poly (in triple OT) and UCSB, handing the Gauchos their first home loss of the season and snapping two streaks -- an 11-game home and eight-game overall -- in the process.
Since Saturday's game is the only one of the week for UC Davis, it is ready to make one final push for another regular season title before the team enters the Honda Center on March 8 for its Big West Tournament quarterfinal game.
